Quote: General William Hardee was tired by today's fighting. Not tired enough to not do his duty. He had seen General Beauregard's brave, but foolish charge into the battle and consequently get cut down. The age of Army generals leading from the front has passed. It was for the younger brigadiers and colonels in the army. He picked up his spyglasses to look at the Yankees in front of him. He then glanced at the sky and noted that...

The more I read about Logan, the more I think he was hosed. Every history where he shows up, he's at the forefront of the fighting and making the right moves. A better fighting general would be hard to find. I only wish he was from Ohio.

As some of you may have noticed (most of you I hope) there have been a few games floating about the forums of late - Stratego has done an amazing Roman game (which I sadly missed) and is now kicking off his Knight's Tournament, while allsirgarnet has taken the helm of a Waterloo campaign, North African campaign and an Arthurian campaign to date.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Southerner, but, for some reason, my favorite spot at Gettysburg is the Gouverneur Warren statue on Round Top. Incredible views, yet not somewhere every tourist goes, and from that vista, the little-known Warren made some of the most important tactical readjustments in the war, all by a little-known dedicated soldier mostly lost to history.

Not only that, I would say that a lot of people were not that obese overall back then because of a prevalence of manual work, different diets with less processed foods than now and even times where food was not that plentiful. Factor in also, the state of medical science with less life-prolonging medications and surgeries than today's medicine.

Dear all,
I've been looking a lot at the various categories of strength in ACW armies recently (it would be much easier if you'd followed the British practice and consistantly report "Present Under Arms" to remove non-combatants*). A question has arose between the difference between PFD and PFDE. Now obviously the difference is between those available for duty who are armed (by the state) ...

We have one of these for the American Revolution but not one for the Civil War. Where would you serve during the Civil War?
Also feel free to post if you have a specific division or unit in mind.

Let me tell you what is coming. After the sacrifice of countless millions of treasure and hundreds of thousands of lives you may win Southern independence, but I doubt it. The North is determined to preserve this Union. They are not a fiery, impulsive people as you are, for they live in colder climates. But when they begin to move in a given direction, they ...

Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield. 1) It's local. 2) It was the 'perfect storm' battle for the deep south. Fredericksburg and Gettysburg are close seconds.

I'd be interested to know who it was you touched, did he have a story? Where did he serve? I have always been compelled by the unknown people who did not make te pages of history.
Good topic.

And thus the agency sends a message to all their employees that this type of behavior is ok.
If something like this happened in the DoD, people would be ushered to the door....starting with the person guilty of the policy violation.

I have always felt that a reading of the constitution leads to the interpretation that secession was legal in 1861. Morally, of course, if the colonists broke off from Britain, how could it be justified that the South could not break off?
