i would definately call them or email them before buying a new one... they come with a 2yr warranty, if the unit is defective, they should replace it at no cost

Thanks for all the input. Re: the air stone, I guess I went off topic. With the qt, I don't need an air stone but like mgamer said evaporation happens regardless anyway. Keeping the qt empty is my plan. I'll keep the extra biomax bag in the main tanks filter and when I need the qt, I'll use it in the shelved hob and heater after filling it with conditioned tap water at the correct temp. Another reason I'm trying to avoid...

If your fish are OK, I would not mess with the ph level. Fish will do fine in a ph of 6. If you really want to raise the ph of the water you can use crushed coral. This can be done several different ways, you can mix a little crushed coral in with your substrate, put some in a media bag inside of your tank, or put some in a media bag inside of your filter. To reiterate, you don't really need to, your fish have most likely already adapted...

How did you clean it? Sounds like there might be some calcium buildup inside the impeller and it takes a while for it to start. I would suggest taking it all apart and soaking it for a few hours in full strength vinegar to clean it and then try it.

Leave the ug filter alone for now . It's your tanks bio filter. I would get the hob filter you have running on the tank with the ug or get a new hob and have that run with the ug for 4-6 weeks until it is well established. Then you can decide if you want to take out the ug filter or not. Do regular water changes and test your tank water for ammonia and nitrites to make sure that's not what killed your other fish. P.S> go lite...

I'm really not sure about the vaseline... I'd probably worry more about the
nitrate and maintenance myself. What type of skimmer is he running?

Ok, I officially have a headache from trying to get together the stuff I need. So far I have come up with this stuff to purchase from here
bubble counter, ck valve, needle valve package and co2 tubing.
From what I understand, I will be running a line off the co2 tank, attaching the needle valve, then a check valve, the bubble counter, and another check valve. Then I will run my line to ...

Decided to put it in tonight, this is after 5 minutes with valve fully open in 6.5 inches of water, I think I need to raise it so it's sitting in 5 to 5.5 inches. That pump is a beast.

Which protein skimmer to go with? I'm looking for the best fit for a skimmer to use on a well established 125 FOWLR tank. This is for a friend/customer of mine whose tank has, unbelievably, never had a skimmer running in it. Needless to say his tank is a mess. He has a 30g Oceanic sump and doesn't want to spend too much. I told him it's the #1 piece of equipment not to skimp on.

whisper filter
I was given a whisper filter unit with an aquarium with no directions on how to hook it up. I set up the tank with an ugf unit about a year ago and that has been fine until about a week ago when I started losing fish. I have this whisper unit that I thought I would hook up along with the ugf but have no idea on which one I ...

Definitely not advisable. The fish need some room to swim not to mention
the parameters are going to change to rapidly. Get your self a 10 gallon
and call it a day.

Use liquid soap and check all joints and connections. If there is a leak it
will bubble up and you should be able to tell. Anything that man makes can
go bad on you. check everything one step at a time.

only hear the water falling when the level gets a little low
