I am not sure where your problem is, but the bolt should be right under the cap, and you probably need to use a 7/16" socket with extension and not a 5/16".

Check the fuse next to the lid switch if you havent already done so. Also check the lid switch
actuator to make sure it is making the lid switch when you close the lid.
If all of that seems ok the timer is most likely but I would hate to guess on such an expensive part. If the above doesnt work post back and I will try to help you diagnose the timer.

I unplugged the washer, let it sit for an hour, reset the controls and ran the washer and it WORKED! I did notice a slight burning
odor but very slight. I am happy the washer is working but what about that slight burning odor? Any ideas anyone? Thanks so much people!

If you get the right lid switch you will not have to cut the wires.
To replace the lid switch you have to remove the case of the washer. This page will help

You have a plastic
comb filter under the spin basket that is clogged. Dump

The lid switch causes this most of the time. You will have to remove the case of the washer to access the lid switch. This page will help! Whirlpool Washer

If you take off the bottom service panel you should find some tech notes which will show you how to put it into test/troubleshooting mode.
See if this tells you anything about the problem.
