Hi, might be heat, get Temperature Monitor - 4.51... http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19994 And check for dust inside & on the fans. Boot off your original Install Disk while holding down the d key , (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.

So the whole thing, same as with Windows, of imaging a system, having to restore an image or move a system to another drive got messed up? What happened with my idea to have a nice clean new install of OS X on 30GB partition on either internal or EXTERNAL 1TB drives? That, to me, is the way out. You build on a solid foundation and errect the sides and walls and put everything in place, then move the furniture in (your data files) and may need...

In addition to the battery, while you have it open make sure to check for dust buildup and vacuum out the intake and exhaust vents. It might be overheating. A collection of clinking, clanking, clattering caliginous junk. Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier PDP11

Thank you for your help. I just find it annoying when some know-it-all expects everybody to know the inner-workings of something, and then masquerades 'helpfulness' with cocky insults and rudeness. Where I come from, you either help, or get out of the way. Perhaps showing his 'brilliance' makes him feel better about himself? g5 Dual 2Ghz

What 64-bit applications for G5?
Published (2009-11-28 13:29:00)
I also take it that theres no 64 bit OS 10.5 kernel for the PPC? No. And it's not necessary. Even Snow Leopard boots with a 32-bit kernel by default. It doesn't preclude you from running 64-bit apps. http://blog.fosketts.net/2009/08/30/64bit-snow-leopard-kernel/ PowerMac G5 Quad (12 GB RAM, GeForce 7800 GT), 17-inch PowerBook G4 (2 GB RAM) Mac OS X (10.5.8) iPhone 3GS

Connect the external drive to the G4, connect the G4 and G5 with a FireWire cable, start up the G5 with the T key held down, and use a tool such as Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone the G5's internal drive to the external terabyte drive. When the clone is finished, delete items from the G5's internal drive if possible. If not, erase the drive.

Hi! A heat problem generated by increased processor useage could trip it out as could a bad logic board or a weak power supply. I'd start by using istat menus to monitor some of the temps and look in the console logs (apps>utilities>console) for clues. Tom

After many reading in the forums and testing, installing, checking,
THIS is my working solution (compare "Technical Q&A QA1141" on Apple Developer Connection):

1. Launch terminal application (found in folder utilities)
2. Check environment variables by entering: nvram boot-args

Well, after many tries and simply letting the blue screen stay there for 10+ minutes, the desktop did come up. I have rebooted several times and things seem normal again with one exception. I don't get the startup chime. I don't know what that is indicative of or if its' significant.
Any ideas?
Thanks,

I'd say stop using it. It probably is the power supply burning up and melting. I dont know about the ports in the front sparking but theres a high risk of fire hazard there so i'd say stop using it. That is until you get a new power supply.

Hi monike, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Yes, you can erase the Hard Dive, Install & have it just exactly like the minute it was first purched, but is it maybe just settings that need changing?
For absolute complete "newness"...
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.

Might need an updated Mouse driver if you have one installed.
