Macbook Cracking and Chipping
Published (2009-12-05 13:16:00)
No one here can give you a definitive answer. You'll have to go to an Apple store/authorized reseller for that. With that said, cracks in the topcase, near the trackpad, are fairly common on the MacBooks, and most users have had their topcases replaced free of charge. The same may not hold true for other cracks. ~Lyssa 13" White Macbook; 160 GB black iPod Classic ^_^ Mac OS X (10.5.6) iBook G4 1.07 GHz...

Hi ASal, I'm pretty confident in saying that your neighbor doesn't have a virus. What happens when you go to verify permissions when booted off the installation disc? Does it error out? Does it run through and not successfully verify them? I wouldn't be too hung up on your inability to repair them all, some just never successfully revert back to the default. That doesn't mean there's something wrong. I'd be more...

New Hard drive help needed
Published (2009-11-29 17:06:00)
In a pinch, an external enclosure for the drive type or one of the "universal" drive adapters can be had at a reasonably stocked computer store to hook up the new drive. Then use Super Duper or Carbon Copy Cloner to clone your current drive contents onto the new one. Swap the drives out and you'd be set to go. -Douggo Mac Pro (2X 3Ghz dual core); MacBook 2GHz C2D; G4 MDD Dual 867 Mac OS X (10.6.2) ...

MacBook freezing
Published (2009-12-05 08:21:00)
I may have been premature with my diagnosis. I have it narrowed down to this: when I shutdown, then restart later, pressing the power button results in the chime/startup gray screen, but after 15-20 seconds of the spinning wheel, it freezes. Pressing the power button to turn off and restart again, results in a blank screen with the power light on full. If I tap on the underside corner of the left side of the battery, it starts up and works...

I can see what you mean it might be misread. Anyway, let's not hijack this thread any further. If the original poster desires to make such a modification, they are clearly going to see they are on their own in the attempt to do so. An Apple user since 1981 Mac OS X (10.6)

When you try to adjust the volume does it display the Volume with a Cross through it and not allowing you to adjust the volume.
And you said headphones work, Can you look in the headphone port while the machine is on? If its glowing red, its only supporting Digital Out.
Reset SMC if it is display this red light, then try again.

Try resetting the System Management Controller ( SMC) by disconnecting AC adapter and removing battery and then pressing the power button for 5 seconds. Reconnect the battery and AC adapter and then try starting up by pressing power button.

That's perfectly normal. The MacBook's fan should always be running; in the older MacBOoks, the idle speed was 1800 rpm, and you're not too much higher, so I think you're perfectly fine.

Hi WhiteSwed,
It's possible that there's an issue with one of the temp sensors or a fan. The computer isn't designed to be used on your lap in first place, so if you're primarily using it that way that can add to overheating problem (your pants/shorts/legs are blocking the exhaust vent area).
Can you clarify on "after a time of using" as that's a bit vague. Are we talking 5-10 ...

You need a bigger hard drive most of all, Eye lash, or you need to delete a lot of things from your existing hard drive to make more room.
Yes , you could certainly do with some more "RAM" memory too, but your HD is right at the lower limit of "safe" operating space.
My suggestion would be that you upgrade both. You'll find doing so gives your MacBook a whole new lease of ...

This is not the full panic report. Panic logs are fairly long in Leopard, and we really need the entire thing to check for clues.
Please post the entire log, if possible.

If you upgrade to Snow Leopard, you're going to need at least 2 GB of RAM as well. The minimum requirement for Snow Leopard is 1GB of RAM, and most folks here recommend at least double the minimum for a pleasant computing experience.
Upgrade your RAM, then plan on keeping your computer another 3 or more years.

Hannah--
I'd check carefully around the casing first, especially near the trackpad, and underneath. While MacBooks are pretty strong little beasts, they aren't totally indestructible. You may have a hairline crack in the case.
You'd have to lean really hard to damage the innards. It's possible, but not probable.

Try this:
Save all your work, connect the AC adapter and remove the battery. Work without the battery and see if the problem goes away.
If so, what's worked for others is to fold a piece of paper a few times and place it between the battery and the bottom side of the trackpad.
Does your battery fit in its slot? Do you see any signs of swelling with the battery?

You can make an appointment to take your MacBook in to an Apple Store and have a Genius look at it, but if it’s out of warranty and the logic board is failing, there’s not much you can do.

Any electronic device that is malfunctioning can cause potential problems somewhere else, so the possibility is there. Now with that said it's highly improbable that the drive if bad will cause issues with the logic board.
I would say that you'd be fine to put the bigger drive back into the Macbook. I would not eve give it a second thought....

You can't upgrade the processor in a Macbook.
What you can do is add more RAM, 1GB RAM is not enough for your purposes.

If it doesn't show up in Disk Utility or via Target Disk mode, the hard drive is probably toast and the only way to recover data is to send it off to a data recovery service.
There is a slim possibility that putting the drive in an external enclosure would allow you to rescue data.
