Erase Backup Drive
Published (2009-11-22 11:03:00)
the easiest would be to reformat the drive and start backups from scratch. do NOT try to delete the backups from finder. if you don't want to erase the whole drive, the only way to delete old backups is from TM interface. enter TM, scroll back in time to a backup you want to delete, click on the "gears" action button in finder's toolbar and select "delete backup". this will delete the whole backup for that time...

Again, look for any disk images or sparse bundles. You might have, for example, a disk image (name usually, but not necessarily, ending in ".dmg") from a download of something. Thanks very much for your help as this seems to have done the trick as I just finished a TM backup -- I didn't want to respond until it was over lest I offend the mysterious gods of the iMAC I deleted all dmg from my download folder and that did the...

No, I did a backup from the new logic board as soon as it was replaced. That is what prompted my discovery of my lack of access to the old one. I reiterate that the folks at the Apple Store ought to be thinking about this issue when doing things like the NVidia recall/replacement, and give customers some advance warning that they will need to think about this issue. A lot of hassle could have been avoided. MacBook Pro 2.2 GHz Mac...

Backing up 5.7 GB every time

Hi, it finished backing up my entire iphoto library. If I now exclude my Iphoto Library in Time Machine then when I want to remove the exclusion to back it up will Time Machine have to back up my entire Iphoto Library all over again or should it just back up any changes made after the previous backup? I was thinking about a possible conflict between Aperture and Iphoto as well. Earlier today when Time Machine kept saying that it was going to...

How big are the internal disks and how big is the external disk?
If the external disk is big enough, create two partitions on it and
use one for each Time Machine backup.

Yes, you can do that, as long as you allow sufficient space for the Time Machine partition (see #1 in the Frequently Asked Questions User Tip at the top of this forum).
#6 there has instructions for partitioning. It details how to add a TM partition to a disk with other data already on it, but the procedure is the same.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
Do you mean you're on Snow Leopard and want to downgrade back to Leopard?
That's possible, but difficult, and some things just won't work properly.
For any application (Apple's or a 3rd-party), if the version you now have isn't compatible with Leopard, it won't run. That's probably going to be most of them.
Also, even if you find/restore the...

IPhoto, Address Book and Mail have specialized interfaces for Time Machine.
Start with iPhoto. Then select File > Browse Backups from the menubar; or select Enter Time Machine from the TM icon in the menubar; or click the TM icon in your Dock.

Probably not. Everything on the new disk is new to that disk and will be saved again. This also happens if you do a full restore from your Time Machine backups: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338

Yes, but TM will create a separate backup for the new machine. It will not add on to the old machine's backup. Be sure your TM backup drive is large enough to handle keeping both backups. If not then either erase the backup drive or retire it and get a new one.
