I just tried this and, for the first time in weeks, I have been able to turn my iphone off!! Fingers crossed it stays that way. I am guessing this is a combination of a software update which exacerbates a fault where some gunk of some description shorts a couple of pins in the connector - pins which are now used that weren't in previous versions of the OS, perhaps? iBook Intel Mac OS X (10.4.10)

Mine is currently doing this, it is also not shutting off, it reboots right after I try and turn it off, and it is not charging through my Macbook either. It won't even show up in ITunes. When I connect it it says that a USB device is draining too much power and has been disconnected. Terrific. Can't charge and won't shut off. MacBook Pro Original IPhone

iPhone 2G power on problem

If restoring as a new iPhone didn't fix this, you likely have a hardware problem that needs evaluation from an Apple Store Genius Bar, your carrier (if they service iPhones in your location) or an independent iPhone service business (if our of warranty - Google to find these). iPhone 2G power on problem
Published (2009-11-26 14:58:00)
The phone remains on after I disconnect it, and I think battery is still in a good state, when I leave the iphone on it lasts for about 2-3 days. I tried restoring it in iTunes with backup and as a new iPhone. I've tried reseting the phone and I can't get it to reset. I'm holding both of the buttons (my last attempt was about 20 sec) but it doesn't reset. It just shows the Slide to shutdown screen and after about 10 sec it...

Did your original apple accessories works as speakers or headphones?
With the new firmware +3.1 if you connect your iPhone to an accessory that can regolate by him self the volume (in or out) of the iPhone the volume slider will disappear an also display a pop up that allerts you that may be some problem using that accessory.
Hope it helped you.

Are you talking about the sim pin lock? If so, and you enabled a sim pin lock under settings on your phone, that's how it works when you turn your phone off. You have to enter the sim pin lock code when you turn your phone on. Some carriers, by default lock all sims, they usually have a default unlock code, or PUK code you can obtain from your carrier. If this is the case, call T-...

Did you try to restore your phone "as new iphone"? Don't use your backup to restore from afterwards, it might contain corrupt files causing these problems.

Just to ask the obvious - are you sure the ring/silent switch on the side is not set so silent? The orange dot means silent.

Afraid not. It's pretty much my one and only gripe with the iPhone. Heard you can do a jailbreak but even then the tone can still only last about 2 seconds.I wouldn't do a JB for anything let alone a new tone. Best just add it to the Wish List site and hope Apple get the message.
