When you insert an audio CD in iTunes, iTunes does a call out to Gracenote/CDDB, which attempts to match the pattern of tracks and times to something in its database. If it is not in the database, all you get is "Track 1," "Track 2," etc. The process has nothing to do with the iTunes Store. If you have a CD which Gracenote does not recognize, you can type the info into iTunes, and then while the CD is still in the drive,...

Disregard the linked instructions above for moving the iTunes music folder . That is for moving your music folder to a different location and continuing to use it with the same iTunes on the same computer. To copy your iTunes library to a new computer, copy \Music\iTunes\ folder from one computer to the other. Don't copy just \Music\iTunes\iTunes music\ folder. You can do this using the FW target disk mode or simply copy using an...

Like I said before it sounds like there is missing data or corruption in the files. Another thing you could try is to open one of the files in an audio editor or converter and save it as an mp3 again. Switch is a free audio converter and Audacity is a free audio editor. You could probably google for others. One thing that I forgot to ask in the beginning is what happens when you double click on one of the problem files? What app do they open...

(How sad -- replying to my own question haha!). Found the error - The CD that would not import was disc 2 of a 2 disc set. Even though in the metadata it was labelled as disc 2 of 2, the title of the album was the same for both discs. iTunes thought it was importing a duplicate disc so refused to accept it. Changing the band name name to 'test', importing it, then editing the title back solved the problem. Still would have been nice...

Normally, the CD appears with the name of the playlist you burned it from. However, the name is not burned onto the CD. iTunes just makes an entry into a "CD Info.cidb" file on your computer. Read through the manual on the Onkyo surround system and it says that when auxiliary units are plugged into it, it acts as a preamp. Really scratching my head on this one. Thanks y'all for the suggestions so far. When I feel like getting out of the wheelchair and crawling behind the unit again, I will check to make sure the fibre optic cable did not pull loose from its plug. Will post back. I have used Griffins iMic to do this in the past. The analog needs to be converted to digital. I connected the tape deck directly to the iMic as I did not need to boast the analog signal.
I have used Roxio Spin Doctor - part of Toast $$ and Griffin Technologies Final Vinyl - free.

Locate the items in the iTunes library listing, and drag them to your flash drive (or whatever you will use to make the transfer). Alternatively, you can find the tracks in the iTunes Music folder and drag them to the drive (make sure you drag directly to the removable medium). Then mount that volume on your laptop and drag the tracks into the iTunes window.
If any of these tracks ...

Your computer is nearly 4 or 5 years old. That's about the lifespan of an optical drive these days. DVDs will usually be the first to show problems. I can't state for a fact but I sincerely doubt there is any warranty left on the drive unless you purchased some kind of extended plan.
Since you don't say what you tried, apart from "every suggested remedy", I won't go through a list...
