Another hint: Since you can't "unmix" your recording and apply compression to every single instrument track, you might try out the AUMultiBandCompressor (just add it as a new effect in the individual or Master Track settings). It compresses several frequency bands individually instead of turning the overall volume up and down. So if e.g. the bass has a peak in one place, it'll only lower the low frequencies and not...

You know what the sad thing about every discussion I read about high resolution is? Everywhere I look I see people listening to music on an iPod or some other player. Earbuds or headphones. I know just 2 people here in AZ that actually have a high end system capable of playback worthy of all the resolution concern. iPod and mp3 players is a large percentage of everything now. The rest seem to be desktop speakers of some sort for the computer....

GarageBand - Guitar Effects

This worked for me at least and maybe for you also. If the issue is the effects are missing for real instrument Guitars...or if even the Guitars option is missing. Go to Library>Application Support>Garageband>Instrument LIbrary>Track Settings>Real. For me, I actually no longer had Guitars even show up in Real Instruments so the Real folder contents may be somewhat different if Guitars show up for you in GB...

For what you're doing you may want to use the AU multiband compressor. This will let you compress select frequencies differently. I probably would shut off track compression and just use the AU in the master track. 20" iMac 2.4 / 2.4 Aluminum Macbook Mac OS X (10.6.2)

I use the amp mods and effects for my bass, too - but then I've never shied from doing so in real life either. With a few tweaks and adjustments, you can get all kinds of killer sounds. I also have the limited edition of IK Multimedia's Ampeg SVX that I use as an AU plugin effect for a nice bump in bass amp power. I plan on upgrading at some point, but for now I've plenty to play with. MacPro Quad Core Mac OS X...

Sound quality for both are CD quality or better. Although Logic is capable of much higher quality you would also need a interface that can record at higher bitrates to really take advantage. For recording most pop, rock, county music in a home studio both DAWs will be fine.

A external drive is the best way to go for a number of reasons. Beside being a faster drive it isn't being used by the operating system and background apps. Also projects take up a lot of room, better to keep them off your main drive. Firewire is usually preferred but USB 2.0 will have no problems what so ever. I use both for Garageband, Logic and Final Cut no problems....
