Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
If you're running a Managed library, then it's the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the
iPhoto Library when Importing
If you're running a Referenced Library, then you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing.

Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library:
hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
If that fails:

1. Quit iPhoto
2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.

Really easy:
Find all the movies in your iPhoto Library. Then Export them to a Folder. Then delete them from iPhoto.
What makes this easy is that every movie is automatically keyworded when you import it.
So to find all the Movies:
File -> New
Smart Album
Keyword -> is -> Movie
Now that you've found them. Select All and
File -> Export Kind: Original (Note: ...

You can add a caption to the photo by clicking on the blue circle with the "i" in the center at the lower
left corner of iPhoto. Then put your caption in the Description field.
To export a photo with the metadata included, keywords, titles, descriptions, etc. do the following:
1- select the photos you want to export.

You mean separate from a Time Machine backup? No. As long as TM has sufficient room for backing up you can store them there. That is if you're using TM with
the Time Capsule.
If you access the Time Capsule wirelessly I would not try opening and using those libraries while still on the TC. Dropouts are not uncommon with wireless LANs and if there is a dropout while iPhoto is ...
