There's clearly a difference between our interpretations of fiddling here. To me fiddling means keep changing settings/pulling cables etc etc to try to correct a persistent problem. This has never been my experience with the tv. There have been reboots, but I don't perceive the 6-10 times this has occurred between 5 units over nearly 3 years to be counted as an issue (especially when I often try to cause them problems in order to...

you should report the issue here - http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html this is just a user-to-user support forum, with no input from apple. no-one here will know when (or if) any particular issue is likely to be fixed (or not). the only official way of reporting issues is via the link above. Also, as far as order in concerned, you may be able to fit it all, do Sync photo choosing All and Sync Photos Before Other Media, if photos are important to you on the TV, because you can't stream them. I would also attempt to Sync all your music and movies as well. In my case, I Sync all my photos and music, but have so many movies that I stream most of them, syncing only a few. On the Summary page you'll want a Custom Sync and...

I have a very strong love hate relationship with my Apple TV - I love what it is supposed to do (and manages to do if the wind is in the right direction) but hate all the problems (especially the various problems that seem to be fixed by a restart). That sums up my feelings exactly. The various problems that seem to be "fixed" by a restart result from the ATV's anemic hardware, IMHO. The only permanent fix for that will be a...

Figured this out on my own. Had to do with a music video that had worked its way into the playlist by the way it was set up. ATV was set not to include music videos so it didn't include it when syncing. I changed the smart playlist--problem solved.

Sorry for the confusion. You can not downgrade to ATV firmware 3.0, the only down grading you can do is a factory restore which takes you to the firmware version that came with your ATV. In my case thats v1.0 I think the source of your confusion is that I upgraded to 3.0.0, and then the very next day 3.0.1, so I have referenced both in this thread. You make an interesting point, about Boxee. Does Boxee only work with v3.0.0, and not v3.0.1?...

Unless there is some specific artwork added to the file, the poster frame will be taken from a default setting which is usually a few frames into the movie. You can change the poster frame using Quicktime 7. However you can also add your own artwork into the get info window, which will be used instead of a poster frame....

You cannot use a keyboard with the tv. Personally I find the on screen character selection quite good, but if it's a problem for you, you might consider an ipod touch/iphone as a preferable option for typing into search fields on the tv.

This error is often innacurate and often means AppleTV can't access the file - this would happen if you restarted your Mac, the iTunes connection was lost, and AppleTV realised it could not access something that would automatically stream because the connection was lost.
Problem is that even if you restart the AppleTv the 'access state' soemtimes doens't refresh so AppleTV still ...

Are you able to test the output with something else, it would be unusual to have sound over HDMI but not via an analogue connection and optical. Are you sure you have the right settings on your receiver.

Do you have an AppleTV, if so you could just browse movie rentals to see what's available.
If not, and you're considering purchasing, go to the iTunes Store for Canada and view some movie products - the info usually says something like 'also available in HD on AppleTV' when HD rental is available.
HD rental is only via AppleTV, and rentals cannot be moved to other devices....

Sorry to heat that. I had also enjoyed my ATV (version 1.x era) for a couple of years with no trouble until firmware upgrade 3.0 turned it into a useless brick.
Apple calls it a "hobby", but they should call it what it really is which is beta. Users should treat it as such (ie, think of upgrading as an experiment not something to rely on). Alpha is probably even more accurate ...

Router settings should not cause reboots or similar behaviour.
It's more likely a hardware or software issue with AppleTV.
Does it happen with other kinds of media?

Obviously if you wish to try the mini as an alternative it's a decision for yourself. However have you not considered that the behaviour you experience is something to do with something other than the tv itself.
As a closed unit the software and hardware in yours is pretty much the same as mine, other than a defective unit, it seems likely to me that it is the different ...

I'm not all that impressed with the HD quality of Star Trek on the Apple TV (unlike other HD movies I've purchased). It seems a little soft. Maybe I'm overanalyzing it though.
I watched the HD version of Star Trek on my ATV yesterday and it looked as good as any other HD video. I didn't see anything wrong with it. The quality of HD video varies from one video to the next in any ...

If you right click on the AppleTV device in iTunes, does it have Transfer Purchases option?
If it says 'Turn Off Streaming' you have set this up as a streaming only library not a sync library, and doing so may wipe any exisiting content on the AppleTV.
You can't drag and drop items from AppleTV.
