I suppose that's true. I just picked up what seems to be a good romance anime called Tokimeki Memorial. I suggest you watch it. Thus far it's pretty good.

Cross Game , followed by Cross Game , and thirded by Cross Game . Other than that the people before have highlighted most of the decent to good series this year, except for the sleeper hitter Kemono No Souja Erin . If you enjoyed the likes of Juuni Kokki, Seirei no Moribito, or ancient east asia themed series this is a sure see for you. That said, these two titles are not realy action ones, and pertain more to the character oriented category...

Needless and Darker than Black strike me as the two best action-oriented shows this year. Fairy Tail is turning out to be pretty fun, too.

Chrome Shelled Regios fits your requirements really well. Technically Haruhi Suzumiya might count, but I doubt that's what you had in mind. Fullmetal Alchemist and Ranma 1/2 might also qualify.

Michiko to Hatchin? Seems interesting so I'll add it to my list.

Western animation suggestion: The Pirates of Dark Water . That show kicked so much ass.

I'd say Dragonball , but there's very little chance that you've never read/watched that before. Try Akagi , if overwhelming mental and reasoning powers are your thing.

Maybe Beck? Meets most of the requirements, while the ending isn't exactly definite its also not a cliffhanger more of just an assumed continuance. Great show though, probably my favorite shounen series.

The world is bigger than you think..
After the explosion of the methane hydrate layer, the remaining members of mankind are forced to live in isolated domed cities scattered across the arid and inhospitable planet. They live in a controlled society and are assisted in daily life by autonomous robots called AutoReivs. In one of these ...

It's not a anime but I recommend Avatar - The Last Airbender . The main character is the Avatar who is supposed to master all four elements (A regular person can only use one max) and has an Avatar State that's a sort of defense mechanism where he's capable of drawing on the power off all previous Avatars,

Kimi ni Todoke a breath of fresh air? It's like every shoujo manga ever written. In slow motion. (I'm baffled that you reference this in a request for a mature lead)
Erm.. I don't see Kare Kano on your list. Maybe Nodame Cantabile ? Though the romance can be sparse.

Both deep, intellectually dense anime that make you care deeply for the characters and are quite original in theme and style.
Oh! Edo Rocket - about as original as anything you could want, but it's primarily a comedy.

Kitamura Kou of Cross Game is currently anime's biggest threat to male heterosexuality (I forget which poster I stole that somment from sorry! ).
He fills pretty much all of your criteria for a strong male lead. He doesn't have super powers sure but he's one hell of a baseball pitcher. He's something of the modern day gentleman but isn't exactly a knightly pushover either. As for being ...

I want to recommend this excellent , candidate for #1 series that everyone in this forum should watch, called Cross Game to you... oh wait! You have already seen it. Well it deserved a mention nevertheless.
Higurashi is a series heavily centered around frienship, despite the highly deceptive first arcs that would lead one to think that it is a horror based series or something. And trust me...

Best list I can give you is this: http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.h...orderby=rat ing
Filtered by category: Yuri, must be completely scanlated, and sorted by rating.
If you go back to genre search you can add in more filters to your liking. The comments are usually pretty spot-on in terms of what you get out of the manga, so take a look at those as well.

It's a bit outside the box, but have you considered Mushishi? Ginko does associate with others in every episode, but by his very nature (I dare not say more) his existence is transitory and he generally keeps his own emotional company. It's a marvelous character and a great series.

Well, after reading your request the first thing to pop into my mind was Maison Ikkoku . It starts a little slow when it begins, but the ending is amazing. As much as I love Cross Game I still rank Maison Ikkoku as the best romantic comedy I've ever seen.
You could also check out some of Adachi's other mangas. H2 , Touch . It can be a little strange though, as Adachi ...
