You might not be able to. IF you were to build or buy a powerful Mac then that would be one thing, but the situation you are in means that you would have to make sacrifices to your workflow if you chose one over the other. Are they both hooked into the same monitor? Cuz, that could make life easier.

21.5" is 80% of screen area. so yes there is a difference. 2.5" = 20% less.

Just my opinion, but at this point if you're willing to spend over $1k on a system, why would you NOT consider spending some money on an SSD, even if it's a "small" one for the boot drive?

How many DIMM slots? I'm guessing that there are 2 slots, and both were filled previously. If the board specifies a maximum of 2GB, and there are 2 slots, you can probably only put a 1GB DIMM in each slot. The PC is likely choking because it doesn't accept 2GB DIMMs. Try 2x1GB instead.
