When I get a deer, I love it when the weather is in the range of lows 33 or so to highs about 43 or so. I can let the deer hang for almost a week before butchering it. So if you come across any other carcasses and the temps are right, it could last a good while and still be good.....though the guts should be taken out, since they do rot faster than meat. Plus opening up the abdominal cavity helps to get the cold air around the meat....

I do appreciate everyone's suggestions and advice but, for the time being, I think I'll stick with California Natural! There's nothing in that bag that remotely resembles a once living animal let alone one that we consider to be a "neighborhood pet!"

Agree Dogs who have been on a high quality diet, had little in the way of injuries or health issues may not even need joint supplements. Cassie is almost 12 and still no signs of arthritis or joint discomfort Therapeutic supplements should be used when symptoms dictate JMO

JMO I'd use Hokamix or Nupro. Missing Link has molasses (sugar) as a high content ingredient, and Seameal, being a high chloride (salt) and iodine source might not be such a good idea added to a commercial diet which is usually also rather high in salt. Seameal would be a good addition to a raw or home cooked diet. JMO Salmon oil, or whole body fish oil, is a good supplement for coat and ...

I find with Buckley (he has also eaten rotten animal in the wood. perhaps deer?) it mostly just has to run its course. Sometimes I'll spike his water bowl with some broth to get him to drink a little more than usual so he doesn't dehydrate. I do not envy you at all. Yuck!

Oh yes, they can get a type of dementia. I had one that seemed to get a little lost out in the backyard sometimes, or like she forgot what she was doing out there. The vet said there was medication we could give her to help with it, but she didn't have too bad so we never gave her anything. Never got the name of the med, but you could call your vet and ask about it. Good luck, let us know.
