Welcome, Joan! And Happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for your lovely post! I appreciate the beauty in your ability to find peace with the ugliness of this disease. I can relate to just being grateful that we still have them, no matter the shape they are in. I, too, give thanks this year for many of the same things. I hope you've gotten to read the other thanksgiving posts. Again, welcome, and do come back!

I'm so sorry for you loss. My own mother's death came as a shock to us, as well. We never thought she'd go so fast, but there it was. Know that she is free of this disease and that you will be remembered for the great care you provided. Bless you in this time of sorrow.

Nursing home question

Absolutely pay attention to the feelings you're having when you are visiting facilities. Because our LOs who are still walking do have balance problems, I would also be bothered by hallways cluttered with carts. It's a disaster waiting to happen. Falls occur under the best of circumstances, why invite one with carts in a hallway? I will tell you my mother is in a mixed population. Not everyone has dementia on her floor, although...

quote: Meanwhile, Mom needs attention. Start thinking about how far you're willing to go to help your mom, if your dad's personality means that her care is nonexistent, or causes her great suffering. For example: Are you prepared to contact her doctor with a list of symptoms even though your dad will likely be mad at you? Are you prepared to pick up your mom and take her to the Alz center whether he agrees or disagrees? Are you...

Pam, Welcome to our community. As you have already seen the members here love to share. WE are all dealing with a difficult disease and the support here has helped me to bear it better. The guilt is something we do to ourselves so be kind to yourself as you use a theraputic lie to help handle. If she were home she would probable still want to go "home". My mother is in her own home and she wants to go home. Take heart that you have...

Hi Kitty K, Sorry that you had such a stressful and exhausting day at the ER. A thought that came to mind when I read your post is whether your daughter may have had a panic attack. These can cause an accelerated heart rate. I will keep you and your daughter in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so very sorry for what you are facing. Your fear and your pain must be intense. Please don't let that fear and pain stop you from making the best use of the time you have left. There is no easy way down the path you are on, so use your time wisely and know that we are all here for you, holding you in strength in prayer.

Rosemarie, When my mother lived with us, she would get stuck on something and couldn't let it go. Until somehow we could distract her (which took a lot longer than it does now). We would say that she would get stuck on a channel. Whether it was the I want to go home channel or the where are my shoes channel, the questions were non stop. It is so difficult to care for someone with alzheimers....

Following my Mom's funeral, and then the first Thanksgiving and Christmas afterward, my Dad did the same. Said "its time to go home." He wanted to go back to the memory care. Prior to that it use to always be a heart breaker taking him back after a family visit. It was an emotional trauma just thinking ahead to taking him back when he'd be asking to stay. I'm completely unable to bring Dad ...

Because it's a new change, it would be good to have her evaluated for a physical reason (maybe a UTI, other infection, etc). If this behavior continues, it'd be a good idea for her to see a neurologist or psychiatrist. Do you think that your Mom will be able to enjoy "everyone" at Thanksgiving? For a lot of AD people, a big gathering is too much. (not saying that's the case with your Mom, just ...

Grace03, Has your dad been evaluated by a doctor for these seizures? And what type of doctor? Is the doctor the one that recommended the Ativan? And what kind of seizures are they? The shaking, falling-down, kind or the vacant, "I don't know who I am" kind? It can make a world of difference in how they are treated? I think we need more information in order to answer your question.

Lisa If it were me, I would start out with the primary care doctor to rule out things other than dementia that could be causing these symptoms(thyroid, vitamin deficiencies and other physical ailments can mimic dementia). If the primary care doctor can find no physical reason for these changes, I would also either have her evaulated by a psychiatrist or neurologist who specializes in Alzheimer's...

Dear Kdoglady, I think you have the right idea. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out that point either. I do notice shoulder and neck tension! I was told to shrug my shoulders when I became tense! Please, let me know if you figure it out. Good Luck.

Raven, I am so grateful that you came here for support. We are here for one another in all aspects of life. God love you. My prayers for you all started the second I realized where your words were headed. And will continue for as long as you need them. Hopefully they will turn into praises that this is all a false alarm. PLEASE keep us informed.

It sounds like your brother has no conscience. Unfortunately for you, this is a good example of a parent helping a child finacially who will never reciprocate when he is certainly in a position to do so. At this point I would not initiate any contact with him. If he contacts you, I would only respond in a very minimal way.

Moving your Uncle to a safe environment sounds like a great plan. I would hope the family could have a sit-down and discuss frankly where this is headed providing Uncle has had a thorough examination by a neurologist familiar with Dementia's. That'll be key going forward. This is a dramatic way to get there to be sure, but his safety has to come first, if his life is in immediate danger... ...

Hugs to you, Always. I'm sorry for your loss. It's never easy, but this time of year it's even worse. This is a hard situation for sure; I know I'm in favor of the ASAP telling. When my dad died, his sister was on her way back from a weekend away, and all my uncle (another sib) did was tell her my dad was in the hospital. She was beyond shocked to learn he'd died already, and I wouldn't wish ...

Deelora I'm sorry about your Mom. What a wonderful gift you have given to each other in these last two years. I don't know the specific answer to your question, though I am sure that some people here will be able to help. I didn't realize that people choking couldn't get hospice and attention for choking. I know that generally, when one is not seeking the services of hospice, they can choose ...
