Thank you Nina. My sister's friend's blah blah, the psychiatrist asked us to give him some names of NH's and he will look into their dementia wings for us. I of course don't know Paramus from the Jersey Shore, although I am learning.

I agree with Marj, take her to the doctors for a check-up and if nothing other than the dementia is causing the behavior, see about getting medications for your Mom. Do you spend a great deal of time with your Mom? If you spend hours at a time with her and she's never physically aggressive with you, perhaps a new nurse is a good idea. If you just see her for an hour or two here and there, she may be on her best behavior for you and...

Sorry to tell you,,but your MIL has "NO legal recourse". The only thing she can do is take back all the crap that your FIL purchased on credit,,and make the people take it back and refund the money,,,if they don't do that,,then she should call the local police/sherriff,,and have them convince the business to give back the money. And since times are so hard,,be prepared for the business owners to say no. Also,,how did your FIL...

My first thought was, "Oh no she didn't!" I'm interested in knowing whether or not you saw this report in writing or if this is something your mother made up. If it is true, I'd let that doctor know that you were going to hold her responsible if your mother got behind the wheel again and killed herself or some innocent.

I'd definitely try to speak with store about your dad's illness and see if they'll be "honorable" and take it all back. Just another part of the disease. Mom didn't go crazy buying too many items, but kept everything. I had stacks and stacks of magazines from the 70's, old zip lock bags (could start a plastic factory with all I found), and just lots and lots of old clothes from 50 yrs ago. Can you get the...

In addition to all the good comments above: 1) What about non-verbal signs of pain - is she curling on her side, etc.? Hospice will be more knowledgeable about this. 2) Sometimes crying out is just a random result of brain damage, not truly evidence of pain or emotional upset. It could have been any other physical display - like a repetitive clenching of the hand, for example. I know it still sounds wrenching - and of course at this stage...

Who is actually going to feed the pureed diet? Like Grassflower pointed out...she may not qualify for hospice. Who's going to be there for 3 meals a day? Is that an extra cost? Do you have the funds if you are going to need to bring in some extra help to ensure things are done? I don't see hospice feeding anyone at night. Grassflower offers some very solid advice. Copy down her questions and take them with you. Take a tape recorder...

Welcome aboard, Phoebe. I think you can already tell many people have had the same experience with siblings. I think it is harder for many men (Sorry, you guys who are the exception out there!) to deal with the illness. As women, we are expected to care for those who are weaker -- small children, the ill of the family. (Not to say every woman is a fabulous loving caregiver either.) The important part is to remember the only behavior you can...

Anita, This is another way to "think outside of the box". If we sit down we can usually come up with new options to the big problem. Only thing I'd worry about, what if LO is in store longer then 1/2 hr (cabbie gone) who confirms mom isn't lost or wandered off down the road?? I could see this definitely happening with my mom, as that's why I always go with her and walk the stores with cart. ...

Hi, Anne. My mom went thru all that in the earlier stages. I was so shocked that I thought perhaps she was in the middle stages but, unfortunately, that comes along, too. However, everyone is different and can enter and exit different aspects of different stages at different times. Hope your mom is in good spirits.

Is there an option of a less invasive surgery to help her? Would a second opinion perhaps yield more options? I would assume that the individuals providing care are licensed and could be reprimanded through the licensing board. Do you have specific names? It seems like the older our parents are -- the more likely it is the doctor will include us in the process. For example, the nurses etc may more easily believe you if your mother is in her late 70s or 80s and be aware that reality isn't always what it appears to be. What about the crazy cousin? Since she must have called her -- does the cousin know of your mom's health issues? Or does she have ...

And it may be that the doctor didn't say that at all. She may have said you can't drive and your mom heard what she wanted to hear .. that its fine for you to drive. Its so hard to know when you're not there with them. I couldn't believe some of the things mom was telling us her various doctors said. Now that we've moved her here, we understand ... not much of it was true. Marie

This is a real toughy. I know that this year my mother will still be in the hospital, or hopefully the special behavioral NH for the holidays. Taking her out will be impossible. I'm so sorry. I can only imagine how much that hurt. They do become like children, and you get the same behaviors you would from a child who was being "forced" to do something. And 10 minutes later everything is fine. It sounds like you are doing all you can, and very creatively, I might add. He's very lucky to have someone like you looking out for him, whether he wants looked after or not....
