Roofing and engineering
Published (2009-12-14 00:00:00)
I noticed your credentials and was wondering if you could help me out. I've been doing roofing and sheet metal since 1990 and would like to get an engineering degree that utilizes my experience and knowledge more than my back and knees. What type deals specifically with our field? Most of the civil engineering programs I've looked at reference land surveying and bridges and the like. I can draw a blueprint and build you a house from...

Water from Ceiling
Published (2009-12-18 00:00:00)
This only happens in the winter, so I'm guessing it must be a ventaliation problem in my attic. I live in ND, and after a few weeks or months of below zero weather it warms up to 35 and water starts to drip and move along the dry wall line in my ceiling. It happened last year and has just started again today. It is happening in the part of the house that has cathedral ceilings. I did stick a dehumidifier in the attic today to see if that...

re: roofing shingles
Published (2009-12-17 00:00:00)
We currently are picking materials for our contractor to begin building our home in Louisiana.  We have no knowledge of roofing shingles, which are best, and which withstand wind, hurricane, etc. elements.  Could you please explain which brand of shingles are best for adherence, withstanding natural weather conditions, etc.?   Answer Hello from a frozen Cincinnati Ohio...... Well there are three MAJOR shingle...

RIDGE VENTS & TURTLE VENTS -...
Published (2009-12-18 00:00:00)
Hello, I am the vice-president of our condo association for a 2 bldg, 32 unit complex in Harrison Twp, MI (metro detroit area).  Approx. a year ago we had mold removed from our attics that supposedly has arisen from soffit vents being stuffed with installation causing improper ventilation.  The company that did the mold remediation said that we needed turtle vents installed with the existing ridge vents for proper ventilation...

Ridge Vents
Published (2009-12-11 00:00:00)
We are installing a new roof to our early 1900's colonial home and a question was raised if we need ridge vents. Here are some specifics. The roof consists of picks in all 4 corners of the house and a flat roof in the middle of the house. The attic is all finished. The ceiling of the attic in most part follows the roof shape (cathedral ceiling plus flat ceiling) except from a room that has a flat ceiling where actually there is a pick on...

condensation on metal roof in...
Published (2009-12-18 00:00:00)
There is a great deal of condensation that actually drips off from the metal roof into the Florida room. It is on a carpeted slab and the windows are old and one has Plexiglass. I don't know if I need to leave a window open all of the time, or put a fan out there or a dehumidifier. It only does this in the winter but there isn't snow or ice on the outside. We are wanting to use it more all year round. Please help Answer Condensation...

new roof
Published (2009-12-17 00:00:00)
Will you please let me know when it is a good time to put a roof on your house if you live in Jacksonville Florida due to the weather cold hot or what?  How does it affect the shingles and asphalt? thanks so much Answer Lisa, If you are replacing your roof, now is the good time.  Take advantage of the cooler dryer weather.  If you have it done when it is hot, the traffic on the roof during installation can mar and...

tar paper
Published (2009-12-17 00:00:00)
I have a customer specifying 55lb roofing paper/tar paper 216 ct 614 Does this make any sense to you? Answer I have heard of 15, 30, 60 and 90 pound. The 60 %26 90# are usually used with the mop down BUR flat roofing. I have never heard of 55# paper. The "216 ct 614" doesn't mean anything either. I did Google it and got nothing. You might want to diplomatically ask them where they got the specs from so you can verify what they...
