I have a GE TFF20VB refrigerator. The compressor turns on for a few seconds (4 or 5) and then turns off. This happens every 10 to 15 minutes and has been doing so for last 24 hours. The internal fans are running continuously while the fridge seems to be cold (normal), the freezer is cool (abnormal) and item are beginning to thaw. I pulled off the back card-board cover and cleaned the dirt and dust around the fan...

Miller Heat Pump

I was outside and heard the heat pump making the usual noise but it seemed loader than normal, went over to it and noticed the fan was not running but smoke was coming from inside the heat pump from the bottom not at the fan, is that a normal function or some sort of cycling function because when I turned it off inside and waited a minute or two, turned it back on and it runs fine, it has smoked twice while the inside blower fan was still...

Residential HVAC: heating unit...

QUESTION: Hello Mr. Borgman- If my question is not appropriate in any way please disregard. - My Aquatherm air handling/heating unit will on occasion continue to heat my home w/o stopping, regardless of what's programmed into my thermostat (TS). In these cases, turning the heat off @ the TS alone does nothing; I remove a door on the air handling unit (releasing a switch) to cut the unit off. - Even if I have removed the door, turned off...

A./C noise
Published (2009-12-25 00:00:00)
When A/C is running, there is a loud whooshing / slurping type noise in wall(bedroom wall where refrigerant lines are) and occurs about once every minute and lasts about 10 seconds or so, dies down, then repeats about once per minute. Even when this whooshing sound is not occurring, there is still a dripping type sound in wall when A/C running. Answer Need to tet the freon first. You may have a valve control of freon to the...

heat pump
Published (2009-12-25 00:00:00)
I moved into a house a few years back with a heat pump, which I had never used before (I heat with wood). I like it in temps between 40 & 60 and have been using it as a back up. This morning, I went out after turning it on b/c the thermostat went to Aux briefly and noticed the fan was not turning and the unit was squealing, even though it was doing a fine job of heating the house. I turned it off. How can I tell if it's the belt,...

Oil Burner acting strange
Published (2009-12-22 00:00:00)
Hi Mike, I have an old Beckett burner in my house and have an apartment in my basement with it's own thermostat. My oil burner will run for about 3-4 seconds and shut off for about 30 seconds - this goes on for about an hour at a time. It does this a few times a day. The rest of the time it seems to run normally. I had it serviced in September. Any idea why this is happening? Thank you! Answer I really don't have a good answer except...

York fans blowing
Published (2009-12-19 00:00:00)
Contractor installed a York D1NZ042N09006A last summer and the A/C worked great. However he never bothered to hook the gas line up before he disappeared. So I did. Come to find out that my thermostat (old one) works for heat pumps and not this unit... it made the heat and A/C run at the same time. So I replaced the thermostat with a new one designed for single stage gas heat and A/C units (RTH230B by Honeywell). However, in trying to figure...

the outside unit Goodman heat pump fan is not coming on and it is making a slight squealing sound. 1. can i run my furnace by using the emergency switch on the t-stat w/o running the heat pump until i can figure out what's wrong with the pump? (it's pouring outside, so i am not going to go out and take it apart to figure out whether the belt needs to be replaced today.) 2. Once I can get out there, how do I check to figure out if...

Transformer and relay (fan control head) r8285D in my Burnham boiler died. What must have caused it? Everything was working fine until last night when my Natural gas Burnham Series 2 boiler gave up. Lost heat and hot water. HVAC guy says I need to replace 4 zone valves and thermostats. Asking for $1350. According to him, my White Rodgers "zone valve" is sending some voltage back which killed the control head on the furnace. Is it a...

Furnace problem
Published (2009-12-25 00:00:00)
We have an "Intertherm" furnace, converted from propane to nat.gas in 1997. The problem being the furnace starts up, runs for 30 sec, shuts off, runs again for 60 sec, shuts off, runs for 1 min. shuts off, continually. The fan sensor was replaced, to no avail. The furnace repair people have been twice, but not fixed. They now suggest replacing the sensor and putting a timer on the fan. Any other suggestions? Through the day we use a...
