AC Voltage
Published (2009-11-28 00:00:00)
Recently my lights have been flickering and now my UPS on my computer will switch to battery, drain and shut off.  I'm not losing power.  I put a volt meter on the line and I was reading 140 volts.  So, I opened my breaker box and did some measuring.  Across the mains i always read a constant 250 volts +/- a volt.  If i measure either main to ground I will read one high and one low....

Sub Panel
Published (2009-11-24 00:00:00)
I have a 200 AMP panel box electrical service on a pole. There is presently nothing connect to the service except the main wires coming in to the main breaker.  I want to run a service wire from the 200 AMP panel box a distance of 75 Feet to a smaller panel box with a 125 AMP main breaker. This will be an underground run.  I understand that I need to install a 125 AMP or larger breaker in the 200 AMP panel box and run wire...

grounding 2 prong receptacles
Published (2009-11-25 00:00:00)
I am a real estate broker.  A 1962 home in California I am selling has no ground wire to the receptacles. The buyer asked that the receptacles be grounded.  The seller added a jumper in every receptacle from the white wire to the ground.  Now, using a plug in tester, the tester shows the receptacle is wired correctly.  Is that legal? Is it safe? Answer Robert Wilber Licensed Philadelphia Electrician...

Published (2009-11-27 00:00:00)
hi, i've read a number of the post about 240v baseboard heaters and they've been hugely helpful.  the only thing i'm a little unclear on is in the panel.  i have baseboard heaters in my family room (just bought the house) and i've verified that in the panel i have 2 20amp breakers connected together.  the one breaker has a black wire, the other has the only white wire connected to a breaker in the...

voltage reading in one circuit
Published (2009-11-20 00:00:00)
Hi, I recently purchased a fixer-upper, and found four outlets (all isolated to a single 15A breaker) that read 115V from one plug prong to the ground, and approx. 80V from the other plug prong to ground.  Obviously, none of the four outlets work.  I replaced the breaker with no effect.  Thoughts? Thanks, Rob Answer Assuming this was a working circuit at one time, there has to be a section of damaged wire allowing...
