If you wanted to get radical on it, you could cross drill the heads of the screws then safety wire one to the other so they couldn't back out more than 1/16th~1/8th or so of a turn even if they did come loose. Granted it wouldn't be fun getting the wire in there, and there's not much room for the spinner pliers to work, but it would all but gaurentee that they'd stay there until you deliberately wanted to remove them.

Head Gasket Leak - Out, not in
Published (2009-11-28 05:31:00)
Coolant coming out of the head studs is quite normal since they are not the highest point in the cooling system. To prevent coolant leakage during a retorque, remove the cooling system fill cap, squeeze the upper radiator hose and install the cap while the hose is being squeezed. This will create a slight negative pressure in the cooling system that will (hopefully) prevent any leakage (or at least minimize leakage). OTOH, putting some paper...

I am surprised this hadn't been posted previously. A very long but highly informative and super illustrated thread posted by Gadwhite giving a step by step process for pulling the gearbox, installing a new clutch, flywheel resurfacing, and replacing all the other things while you're there on a Series 3. It applies to the all Spiders S2-S4. Along with head gasket replacement, surely a rite of passage for an Alfisto....

I could never afford an Alfa when they were new. Only new car I ever bought new was a 1970 MGB roadster. Price was $3,108.00. Included a factory tonneau cover. I will never forget that price. How much was an Alfa Spider in 1970? Robert 1988 Black Spider Veloce

Head Gasket Replacement Procedure
Published (2009-11-27 18:47:00)
If the head is smooth and exhibits no corrosion on the sealing surface I would have it checked for straightness but not plan to surface it unless absolutely required. If needed, take off the bare minimum to bring it back to a good surface; my machine shop says they manage to take off just .003-.005." A shop that knows aluminum heads is pretty much essential to evaluate. You can't judge them by the standards of cast iron. Andrew

Head Gasket Replacement Procedure

If you have that kind of time, troll e-bay for "alfa romeo head remove tool". You can gin one up yourself if you're better at fab than I am, but there's an aussie who seems to sell one every 6 months or so. That's the only specialized tool that's nice to have for this job. And even that's not required.

Horn does not work on my......
Published (2009-11-27 23:15:00)
The PO for my 71 found an interesting solution to the horn problem. He attached a door bell button to the bottom of the steering column with wood screws. The horn works.... but, well, it's sooo declasse, ya know? In the process of fixing my turn signals (I'll ask about the spring in a separate post) I've gotten the wheel off and disassembled and cleaned the horn "button" mechanism. I too have a "red...

I think it has to do with the cams, they changed during the last years of production of the roundtails
Here's what I know.

Looks like a Spider to me. A number of AAA ads in various mags and flyers earlier in the year featured a Spider.

There are plastic polishes that might minimize the scratches. Meguirs sells the expensive versions.
I use Plexus plastic cleaner/polish. It is sold at many motorcycle shops as we use it to clean the plastic windscreens. It won't eliminate large scratches but it will make then less noticable. Do not use paper towels when cleaning the plastic window - too rough.

The lower pan can be done easily enough, but the upper requires the disconnecting of the engine mounts and a means to lift the engine in the bay to allow the rear portion to clear the crossmember.
I'm not for sure, but the upper may be easier if the oil pump is removed too once the lower pan is off.
Suffice to say that it's been done, but dunno if the folks who accomplished it actually ...

For the head unit, I have one of these and I'm very pleased. Overall a retro look, although obviously the face has a digital readout which is not retro. It also has MP3/Ipod capability. This is particularly handy if you have the older style radio cutouts; I don't know if the 84s have the larger modern hole or not.

You'd have to change the whole dashboard, not just the binnacle/pod, and use a matching console. Seems like a mondo amount of unpleasant work.
I just spent two days dealing with gauge issues on an 85 Spider and maybe I don't have the best attitude about dashboards.

To actually see if it is a bad slave cylinder, have someone else push the clutch pedal while you watch the slave to see if it operates properly. If it seams to work, then you have some other issue, the throwout bearing perhaps, or the clutch itself is just worn out. And remember to always use jack stands when under your car.

welcome to the BB. Make sure it's an Alfa first though  sorry........ Low miles for a 76, sounds like a good one. Did you have a mechanic look at it that knows Alfa's? No rust is a must, not many get away without some rust. How's the dash? seats? any accidents?
Good luck with it, post up pics for us to see.

If the CTS is faulty the computer will not go into ' closed loop' operation and instead remain in a default slightly rich setting. IIRC, both CTS'ers are in the head/intake plenum area. Also, if the O2 sensor is faulty the computer will ignore that sensor and remain in closed loop. O2 sensors typicaly last 60K-90K miles.

I am thinking of getting a run of oil vapor condensors made up. These are the black canisters that capture the oil vapors from the cam cover. Nearly every one of these that I've seen has been rusted away and I have not found a source for replacements.
Does anyone have interest in a new one? If so, would you prefer carbon steel (as stock) or stainless?
Let me know,...
