MarineHawk: Perhaps, if you would re-read, and address, a cupla paragraphs from 1 Cor.’s post you would find it enlightening. ************************************************** ************** “This is the heart of the discussion. Energy does not destroy, it is a contributor that allows the bullet to destroy tissue. The bullet penetrating through tissue, that is contacting the tissue, not merely pushing on it or bruising it is what causes...

No hardcast bullets for black...

I have no doubt that a 300gr XTP coming out of my 44 mag at 1300fps will do a wonderful job on a black bear over bait (or anywhere else where I control range, shot angle, etc). Problem is eveery time I get out of the truck I also have to consider the fact that the next critter I see may be a large brownie very close & personal, so I'll carry the bullet I'd prefer in the worst situation, not the best. I carry heavy hardcast...

Cheapest way to go I see is, buy a Lone wolf slide, swap all factory parts to the 45acp slide, might need a few different parts, but most will transfer over. Get a .45 barrel and your done. Will send a pm.

1Cor15:19: Happy Thanksgiving to you too. I agree with much, if not most, of what you say, and I appreciate your insights. I am not disagreeing with your considerable observational experiences. I am just trying to understand those and those of mine and others in a tangible way. And I think we are talking past each other a bit. Let me try to clarify by recap: What I said before was: (Adequate penetration) + (lower energy) is better than...

Old holster help
Published (2009-11-22 00:37:00)
A friend just sent me a WWI 1918 dated holster for my 1917 Colt 1911. The holster is solid and in nice shape overall but like any leather that is nearly 100 yrs old it is a bit dried out. I remember the saddle soap and neatsfoot oil of years ago but I'm wondering if there is any newer and better products out there that work even better? Any input from anyone that has experience on treating old dry leather will be appreciated. Thanks in...

I dug up my old post from another forum: These are the loads that I've found to be most accurate in my gun: (accurate loads put 5 into 1" at 50 yds, fair loads are 2-3" at 25 yds) 310 gr LFN (custom balisticast mold, their standard LFN but shortened to two lube grooves) 7 gr Unique, 700 fps. A fun mild load, accuracy is fair. 9.7 gr Unique 950 fps. This has been the nee plus ultra accurate load. It will consistantly put...

why would you not shoot a treed bear in the head? Most treed bears I've seen are hanging on for dear life and don't pose a real nice chest shot. I'll save the chest shots for when the brown stuff is running down my leg and he's closing in fast. At that point I won't need some guide telling me to insert more lead, I'll be doing that on my own. 8-.45's away, .....now where is that second clip....

Bottom line, be a better shot and don't blame the bullet, like he sez. Same applies for both hollow points and hard cast. Neither is a magic pill. Black bears are easy to kill with well placed bullets of almost any type. Hard to kill with anything on a bad shot. I will say that when a 44 mag Federal factory 240 grain HP failed to completely penetrate a broadside lung shot on a 90 pound forked horn deer at 12 yards, my attention was...

Do a search of the hunting and shooting threads for "bear+protection" and you'll see a lot of information to help make your decision. To summarize all the threads you'll see in your search: The shotgun is thought to be more effective and easier to use in a stressful situation, but the large revolvers are adequate if you devote the time to practice, and more likely to actually be available ...

Hardcast bullets have been proven time and time again to provide significantly better penetration on heavy game than hollow points. I don't see where there is even room for debate.

G21 to 10mm Possible with a conversion barrel G20 to .45 ACP Not possible without a complete slide This is because the breech face is not wide enough. "The breach face on a 10mm slide is .433" wide and a .45 slide is .483" wide. The barrel hood is cut to fit the slide breach face so the 10mm hood is .425" wide and the .45 is .475" wide." J&G sales had some police trade in K frame S&W 38s a while back. I think they were 189$ and with a little work on your part they could be cleaned up to look pretty nice relatively easily. If shiney isn't a real factor we could bead blast it at the shop for a reasonable price and you would still be in your budget and she would have a nice Smith and Wesson instead of a crap shoot Tauras.

Thanks Will. I considered the 454 but after talking to many folks they said the 480 had more of a "big shove" type of recoil as opposed to a "big slap" from the 454. I'm starting to struggle with some arthritus in my hands, especially the right hand (right handed) that made me think the 480 would be a wiser choice for me. That’s still the best stuff for leather by far but don't use neatsfoot oil unless you are going to have the linen stitching replaced since it rots cotton/linen bad. I like liquid saddle soaps like Leather New for maintaining leather best myself but on truly dry leather nothing but neatsfoot will bring it back so it won’t crack beep inside. I use nylon or poly stitching on everything I do just...

329 PD Blast Shield - 2 new posts
Started 2 weeks ago (2009-11-14 02:38:00)  by hiker
On the last cylinder of rounds at the range in September, the blast shield on my 329PD bent/curled down from the frame and locked up on the cylinder. This occurred after 50 – 240 grain 44 magnum rounds that day. After getting home and inspecting/cleaning, I noticed that there was a small wear groove on the blast shield at the cylinder/barrel interface. Anyway, I called S&W and they sent me a ...
