Annie, maybe you should flip the coin about the trailer and see what's left over for a truck, though you could end up with a 34' Classic towed (not very far) by a 1970 Microbus. Gene

Can't say for Fords but there is no way I would change the 3.73's on my Cummins (w/stock tire size). Great pulling power and mid-20's solo. Granted that as transmissions seem to gain more gears every year that pieces can be assembled differently for performance. 3.55's are the classic "gear fast, run slow" choice for Class 8 OTR trucks; they'll get the newest motors into the 1,450-1,600 rpm sweet spot...

You mention considering a 25 footer. We have a 2005 25FB, named Lucy. Over the past 3 1/2 years we have pulled Lucy over 50,000 miles and have spent over 500 nights in her. Lucy has visited all of the lower 48 states. Lucy weighs 7400# ready to travel. We tow Lucy with 3/4 Suburbans with the 6.0 liter gasoline engine. These tow vehicles do a very good job in all conditions. Towing Lucy's weight, I don't think that I would want to...

Yes, the scrapes are on the driveway... the trailer is fine. There's some 'skid plate' type things that seem made to take the hit if you bottom out.

The 1950s and 60s were my era. Pickup trucks were for just work. The cars were big and some could tow adequately. My family, Dad, Mom, brother and I moved to Calif. from Michigan via Rte 66 in 1952 towing a packed 26' Pan American with a '48 Nash Ambassador. We made it!

When you get into the 10,000# trailer weight range, you are most likely in diesel territory if you want a confidant tow vehicle.

I would really like to hear how you like it in 6 months. I currently tow with a 3/4 ton GMC and would really like to tow with a 1/2 ton Ford if it will do the job. My needs are modest..just be able to make the Alaska highway without difficulty.
Keep us posted.

AnnieD,
Recently, my brother-in-law and I were driving in his 2x4 Dodge pick-up(2500 series diesel) off road on slightly hilly grassy slope. We got stuck and had to have a tractor pull us up to level land!@ I would have never thought it could happen but, it did. Just to show you, if it can happen..it generally will.
Good luck on your ultimate choice.

I have used one for towing - but I only towed my 2000 lb T@B with it. Needless to say, it handled that easily.
It's a very nice truck - comfortable ride, much improved interior, torquey HEMI.

I think it would be best to choose an Airstream first so you know how heavy it is and what the tongue wt. will be. You'll probably go through a lot of trucks while you have the same trailer. You want to make sure you get the trailer right because the depreciation on a new one will astound you if you're looking for new. If you want a used trailer, you may not get exactly what you think you want...

Good post. I have and do wonder about how vintage truck specs were arrived at compared to modern trucks. My bet is the process has changed, perhaps even considerably. This fits in with the news I heard today that pant sizes are not what they used to be, ie, a 14 is now a 10, etc. Sigh, oh for truth in advertising!
Godspeed,
Trent

hi kenneth
nice pics.
web search 'bow wave' and winnow the results for rvs/trucks...
all sorts of wave pix will appear and nasa research and so on...
or search here for EITHER term (bow/wave) in the towing/hitch sub forum....
a turbulent bunch of threads will rise to the surface.

some of those threads are lively, while others are jejune, dull as dishwater exchanges...

Dodge Ram 2500 Vs. Ford F250
I'm deliberating between buying a 2000 Dodge Ram 2500 (with Hemi -- V8, 5.8) and a 2003 Ford F250 (V8, 5.4) to tow my 27-ft. Overlander.
Would both of these vehicles work? Any thoughts on Ford vs. Dodge?
As far as I can tell, they both have a high enough tow rating for my trailer. The Dodge is cheaper and I like the way it looks (...

I would highly recommend a Hensley hitch, and nothing else. Definitely not a dual cam type hitch.
