454 chevy timing
Published (2009-12-22 08:24:00)
heres an old hot rodders trick to timing your 454 use a vacuum guage attach it to any non ported vacuum connection on the intake for an example disconnect the vacuum directly underneath the carb that goes to your vacuum assist power brakes then adjust your timing untill you have the maximum reading on your guage this may take several adjustments to allow for advance and retard once you have achieved maximum vacuum back it off about 5 inchs say...

POI Had a Banks powerpack on our 454, if you have the paperwork check for timing recomendations. If I remember correctly the timing is advanced 3-5 degrees over stock.

Hi, you can set your timing the old fashion way. With a vacuum gauge connected to manifold vacumm, you want the highest reading at idle that you can get. The other way is to advance your distributor until you hear your engine gas ping under hard acceleration, then retard it just enough to stop the pinging. This method will work if you don't have a timing light or can't see the timing marks.

MoHo Drivetrain Performance?
Published (2009-12-26 18:18:00)
Hi in AZ. The Classic is 18000 empty, 20000 loaded. The 5.9 is rated @ 230 hp stock. It uses the Allison md3060 6spd.W/ 5&6 being overdrive . Cummins reccomends 100h.p. per 10,000 lbs. We have been all over the western states on our summer job & kept up with traffic @ 75mph. we tow a jeep wrangler 4000 lbs. In the real heat ,I have to watch temps ,water & pyro,in fact one of my spring projects is to pull rad.replace with...

MoHo Drivetrain Performance?
Published (2009-12-26 12:02:00)
Not sure if I am in the right zone here..but I am new looking for insight into purchase of an Air Stream RV. Any insight into the power ratio of a 5,9 cummins on a 95 36Ft RV? I am wondering if this unit will be seriously underpowered. I check with Banks Power, and they claim they can up power a 5.9 to 259hsp, pulling a 6% grade in their test at 70mph. Any insight for the Air Stream Seach guy...cheerio..karl

What distinguishes a crate engine from other replacement engines is that it is a complete, pre-packaged, new-build solution, already packed in a shipping crate ( hence the name) ready to be bought off-the-shelf. The crate engine provides a quick, simple, guaranteed motor. ...

what is horsepower? WikiAnswers - Whats the difference between horse power and torque
Just like 350s, 454s can be built for different applications. A standard 454 will probably do fine and puts out about 220hp but a built one can put out around 500hp. Lets say you add some thing like an RV cam. You can increase the torque and thats better for hills. Just a few changes can make a world of ...

Do you still have the smog pump running off the A/C pulley? If so the pump could be bad causing more load on the belt to the A/c. I trashed the smog pumps when I ungraded to EFI system. Not much, but a thought.

Mel,
Replacing the heater hoses is a job I am planning on tackling sometime in November. From the sounds of it its not going to be a job that I will enjoy .
Thanks for the heads up on what to expect

Hi skid4u. I've got an '06 LBZ build Duramax/Allison. Somebody will know this better ... but I have heard that any year edition of the Allison is the same -- and intended for use across the spectrum from my 3/4-ton truck to commercial size vehicles. Allisons have a solid reputation and I'm not sure exactly where the current smart control lies - computer, Allison grade braking, etc.
Somebody ...

Our 82 with the Isuzu has a drive line brake that mounts to the tail shaft of the trans. there is a horizontal lever under the dash left of the steering column to activate with a cable that runs to the brake.
When adding the gearvenders you need the rear housing that accepts the brake and a longer cable to reach. The cable is available from gearvenders and probably from any truck supply if ...
