I can reproduce the problem with Kruti Dev 010. When I type with a Devanagari keyboard layout I just get boxes. Oddly enough if I type with a Roman keyboard in that font I get Devanagari glyphs. I'll investigate further and possibly log a bug, but it may be an issue with the font that we can't address. When I use the Mangal font with a Devanagari keyboard layout I do get Hindi text. For the Malyallam issue...

The Windows (FF, IE) test with the Beta 2 Pre Release of FP 10.1 now shows the Chinese characters that were rectangles in the 10.0.x releases. Looks indeed that some very nice core fixes around text were made in 10.1.

It is possible. It works better in Flash Player 10.1 and AIR 2.0 than previous versions. If you've tried it out and it has not worked, please try upgrading your Player to a 10.1 beta and see if it works there. Your operating system will have different input methods for each language. When (for instance) you turn on one of the Devanagari input methods on OSX, and you have a font with Hindi ...

Hi David -
When I paste your markup into Notepad, I see the same box for
the hyphen that I see when viewing it in the TLF demo editor. Are
you saying that you see the hyphen display in other Windows apps
but not TLF?
Thanks,
-Chris

Even if you had the same line breaks the last line would overlap the red box in the second image. It looks to me like the character size is slightly larger in the second image as well, but that's harder to judge from this screenshot. It is going to be ...

Kerning in TLF 1.0 only lets you turn the kern pairs defined in your font on or off. If you want to decrease the character spacing you need to use one of the tracking properties. I'm assuming this is related to your other question about matching PowerPoint text, so I'll respond more in depth there.
