You have to keep the content fresh and interesting, if new posters can see that you're running out of ideas they won't recommend their friends to register.

I want to stick with either phpbb , IPB, or Vbulletin.

It is a good program, that is for sure. my forums are on this months launch team, and I can say that the increase in posts, even if they are just temporary by those that are currently posting, has created an increase in traffic at the forums. Sooner or later, that increased traffic will result in active membership. I can see this program becoming a very powerful tool as active membership in it grows.

When people add analytics to their forums, do they use some kind of analytics segmentation to differentiate between site traffic and forum traffic? Thanks.

If you're willing to pay for x amount of vBulletin licenses, you could always use this

We do use myriad custom reports, but I've found that the default data GA provides is generally enough to be able to differentiate between the too, especially with filtering.
So sort of, but not really.

Well put it this way. My domain is www.theacforum.com . I would have used theac but it was taken. Putting forum in there is confusing cause people typo forum(s) and it's long....yet not everyone understands theac is short for Alundra's Conundrum so yeah....sometimes it can cause issues.

If you're looking to pay (even as low as $10), IPB would definitely be my recommendation. Especially with the hosted communities, they even set it all up for you and offer full support to any questions you have. I have been in the admincp for vB quite a few times, and still I have trouble finding and doing even the most basic tasks.

I would start off replying to every topic, if you do have some staff members, encourage them to do so. Then say after a week and you can see the activity starting to pick up then back off a little.

Well the forum does feel generic and boring, but if it did have content and I was interested in the forum's subjects, I'd probably join.

Before you join, please make sure you understand what you step into.
Do you have the skills and time to think up new threads and participate in existing topics, creating 100 new posts over a period of a month on various (or 1) boards - even if the board has a topic you don't know much about or doesn't provoke you to post? If so, feel free to sign up.

I think its still possible, just really difficult and it takes a lot of patience. My niche in particular has several giant forums to compete with-one is the official website and forum of the game and the other is a well established site that is pretty much spoiler central for the game our forums are based off of. Just because its hard doesn't mean I won't stop trying though.
