Someone pointed out to me that I could do 5/9 this year. That would still put me finishing in spring '12. The only problem with that is that I would miss 6 this year and have to do the half exam + adv reserving in the same sitting - then again, this would be the equivalent of studying for 6 this year, I believe. I thought about starting with 7 as well. I am unsure of that route, simply because I've heard it is very difficult and...

That question on schedule rating...

It looks like the only reference says that it will eventually be reflected in experience so make sure you are not double-counting. So I think the model answer implicitly assumes that: 1. The experience period used for the EMF includes only years in which the loss control program was in effect (hey, nobody said you have to use five years). 2. Experience is fully credible. I am most troubled by (2) above because I'm not sure whether the...

In the current syllabus, it's Chapt 15 of Werner & Modlin. In the previous syllabus, I believe it was covered in Sherwood.

the 18 month wait was covered in another thread somewhere. i find it unfortunate, at least. the worst is for folks who need the nation specific exam for ACAS in 2010 and fail, leaving them 18 months to wait. if/when they get to offering exams twice a year, the new 5 (basic rates/reserves) will be the first to get that treatment. but I doubt it will happen until after the transitional half exam period is over (so 2-3 years). if something else...

Obtaining Syllabus Materials

I'm a newbie for exam 5. I have checked the TIA and All 10's website. It seems like if you want the study manual then you have to sign up for the seminar...Am I correct? Can I just buy the study manual without the seminar???

Exam 7 (i.e. New 6) should be offered at both sittings. It would be well worth the additional resources, especially since the CAS has a stated desire to shorten the path to Associateship/Fellowship. It would allow candidates to obtain credentials more quickly, and more of the candidates taking Fellowship exams will be Associates. I suppose the new structure will help by reducing the number of exams to ACAS, but I would much rather be able to...

The L can be gotten via loan from the CAS library, you just have to write and ask to borrow it.
The SK must be bought, but it is rarely more than $100, and often more like $25.

Start with the "text book" Werner & Modlin through chapter 8 (along with Appendix A and Appendix B). The vast majority of the points on the Exam are going to come from these chapters. Master this material!!
Once that's done, tackle the other articles in any order that strikes your fancy; however, I would suggest tacking the CPCU material in this order: Nyce Foundations, Nyce Personal ...

Yes. However, you would need to put in considerably more time than someone with a manual.
I used All 10 for this exam. Included in the manual are past exam questions, going back about 10 years. All of these questions and answers are available on the CAS website, however, not only has All 10 arranged them by section, they have also excluded questions that are no longer on the exam. You ...

Finding by myself, on page 203, in the ITV example, "Expected claim frequency is assumed to be 1% (not 10%, maybe a typo) for both homes." I think.
