I thought that was the number of lives at the end of the year. It was
strange because after 63 it was 0, so to me it looked like there was zero
probability of surviving to 65. So you only had one year of
discounting
with probability and discounting...i think.

I believe it is the second way you said it. You can add includible contributions to this year's
MRC *if* they were necessary to satisfy the MRC last year and were contributed after the tax date and no extension was filed. That amount is then compared to the NC + LA.
I think it is the MRC, rather than the "smallest amount" that is used, but I don't know if I've practiced a problem like this...
