It might just be me, but my first thought on the 100 calorie snacks is that there is still nothing to keep people from eating two or three of those tasty carb, salt and fat combinations - especially those with a cheese or bacon flavor added. Little packages as an obesity solution are wet dream that doesn't take into account human urges, desires and needs. The little package doesn't give you the willpower and motivation not to eat...

Quote: Besides burning it for fuel, our bodies ARE able to dispose of some carbohydrate harmlessly by storing it as glycogen, about 300-400 grams worth. If glycogen stores are depleted, any excess glucose whether of dietary or physiological origin will be stored as glycogen rather than as fat. Glycogen is stored in the liver and muscles, but more in the muscles. The only way to deplete glycogen stores in the muscles is exercise. By far the...

Frederick, it's really harder than it looks! But there is no "competition" in it: at least, in my view, there shouldn't be any. You work at your own pace, and it is not goal-oriented. I always felt great doing yoga - except the one time I tried too hard, and ignored my body's signals, trying to impress someone who was watching, and pulled a muscle. How's that for an example of ego getting in the way? If...

I like your reasoning, Martin, but the calculation's a bit more complicated than that. I think the feed conversion rate for meat is about 10% - you lose 90% of the calories from the food that your meat eats. This is offset by the fact that meat animals can eat foods you can't eat, growing in places where food you can eat won't grow, but I'd be hard pressed to give you a figure on that.

Published (2009-11-29 12:51:00)
While I tolerated statin drugs for years, just a few months after a new doc doubled my dose (I foolishly went along with it, I partially blame myself), I was hit with an extensive polyneuropathy and fatigue. The neuropathy was mostly in my hands. I researched and stopped statins, added CoQ10. It took a year and a half for the symptoms to go away. Neither Internist responsible nor neurologist will willing to consider statins as a likely cause....

Both groups were given a high fat, high sucrose, energy dense diet for 16 weeks.
How is this science? They've introduced two variables that have both been implicated in the problem. It could be fat, it could be sugar, it could be both. Why not test each option before making the pseudo-conclusion that it is both?

When I visited England as a teenager, I was amazed at the tiny size of the "crisp packets" as the call them. I was used to the sort that only obese teens like me could possibly tackle at one sitting, and that were nearly a whole meal in and of themselves. But no, in England the mothers sent chips with their kids to school, in tiny packs, and a sugary near-fruit drink, and white bread, and the ...

Cold-induced adaptive (or nonshivering) thermogenesis in small mammals is produced primarily in brown adipose tissue (BAT). BAT has been identified in humans and becomes more active after cold exposure. Does make you wonder if a regular cold shower would help you activate your BAT cells to burn the excess weight off.

I've become convinced that most obesity is hormonal. And it's way more complex than just insulin. It's a pity the entire focus of the therapies mentioned are drug ...

I dunno. I just got back from my hill-walking (which I do primarily for fitness), and decided to run a few of the hills to get my heart rate up. So after the third interval I puked in the bushes. This likely increased my caloric deficit for the day. Voila!

The fruit juice thing is relatively new and I wonder if that accounts for the fact that you often see young mums in their 20s and 30s who are already quite overweight, especially around their midsections, with their own mothers, who are in their 40s and 50s, sometimes 60s, who don't have the same weight problem. I am not talking about the celebrity ...

The studies seem to go back and forth on this. The body seems to have a pretty effective way of sloughing off excess salt. Even with blood pressure only a minority are salt sensitive. I, for one, am not going to add further restrictions to my diet (I am diabetic, and don't tolerate grains, potatoes, fruit) unless there is a test which says that salt is the culprit. Low doses of blood pressure ...

Was the only difference between the two groups yoga? There might be an association between yoga and fasting, for instance. The problem with the Dean Ornish study was that it changed too many variables, all at once. Esselstyn reports the same results based on diet alone.
I find it entirely plausible that yoga might have the stated benefits, I'm just not ready to say that it does based on this ...

Dr. Duane Graveline: Statins Permanently Damage Mitochondria (Episode 308) Today, Jimmy shares his conversation with a bona fide hero of space science who is now devoted to fixing one important aspect of medical science. HIs name is Dr. Duane Graveline and the issue he is so passionately concerned with is the little-acknowleged but major problem of statin over-prescription.

Including Mr. Benson, the winners of the first four seasons of the show each have added at least 20 percent to their weight at the end of the show.
If we assume these winners got down to the "normal" body weight range, they are likely all obese now, as obesity is defined as being 20% above the normal range.

Given that the elder is around 60, considering the rather dangerous lives they lead hunting, is pretty good IMHO.

I ask how do you stay full by eating carbs? The caloric requirement of a high carb diet is about 20% greater than for a low carb diet. The evidence is seen in the greater amount of calories we eat now that our diet is high carb, 500 calories more. These extra calories come mostly from HFCS. So the question is not how do we stay full without eating carbs, but rather is eating carbs causing us to ...
