Hmm, I was thinking like in the end, after no more other limbs are left, the torso area dies and then so will the head area. But I suppose it's possible that the head will roll but the heart continues beating.

Coma and lawsuit question

Okay, the two boys start pushing and shoving in the cafeteria. Teacher is heading over to break them up. Chase pushes Kyle, who trips and falls, scraping his head against the side of a table, producing a long cut to the scalp. It will bleed. A lot. Kyle is sitting on the floor, blood dripping all over the place. Chase is so disturbed by all the blood that he faints. School nurse is called, as well as 9-1-1. No one is going to be quite sure...

Insurance fraud?

The angle I'm working has the owner kill his horse for the insurance money. That would be more of an insurance fraud issue, and it is a lot of money. I'm just trying to work out the details of the investigation. Thanks!

Sickle Cell Anemia patients tend to autoamputate. That might be a place to start your research.

Not sure this belongs here or in the announcements (help me out, admins!) but rather unexpectedly, on 11/12/09 I've got Marcus Chown , popular science author of We Need To Talk About Kelvin , guest blogging at my blogsite . Basically, he's agreed to answer science questions from people writing SF, and the idea is if you've got a plot issue or setpiece that's bugging you as it pertains to any sort of science, or you ever...

Generally the morgue would be run by the coroner/medical examiner, and it would process any bodies that needed, not just police business. At night there probably would be one person on duty. There would be the coroner, a couple of assistants, one or two clerical personnel, a custodian, and maybe a gofer or an assistant custodian. I don't hang around such places, but I am acquainted with people ...

I'm a psychiatrist but I don't think this needs a psychiatric mindset, more of a psychotherpeutic one.
I'm going to start with the assumption that Jane isn't actually depressed or suicidal. If she is then my answer would change.
You also need to decide if she's seeing someone who is going to work in a solution focused way (bordering on cognitive behavioural therapy way) or a psychodynamic...

I'm guessing not. But don't quote me on that because it is just a gut reaction.

Any rifle plus several handguns designed to fire rifle cartridges and outfitted with a telescope can function as a snipers rifle. To select cartridge and caliber, range is the criterion.
For shorter ranges, several "take-down" .22 Long Rifle guns are available at any sporting goods store. The URL to view the Marlin Papoose and the AR-7. They fold to only 16 1/2 inches:

Coma and lawsuit question
Here is the context:
Chase starts a fight with Kyle, and Kyle falls back onto a metal rod sticking up (one of the seats in those lunch tables that high schools have did not have a top). Kyle goes into a coma.
First question: Can a diagnosis of a coma happen immediately? Like, I'm going to have Chase ...

Unless you meant it in a Kafka, mostly metaphorical sense, I don't think it works. First, such an illness would almost certainly be painful and horrifying. Even if it somehow destroyed nerve endings so no pain was felt, I can't imagine someone's arms and legs just detaching the way a lizard's tail would. The most realistic scenario I can think of would be more similar to a MSRA infection (did ...

Maryn, I'm perfectly willing to look at ads if you want to send them to me.
A "student flute" is normal-sized. It's made of non-sterling metal, with silver plate.
Artley, LeBlanc, Bundy are some of the main manufacturers for students. Gemeinhardt used to make student flutes and various more expensive flutes. For a new flutist, a student flute is fine.
And open-holed flute is "better" ...

They're all over the place--near the river in the Meatpacking District could work, but it really depends on what kind of ambiance you're looking for.
