After two years of subbing to publishers, the first agent I tried (he was later involved with Edit Ink, but another writer recommended him back then) told me something useful. "You're a good writer but unpublishable." Since this was before email I couldn't ask for a clarification of such a ridiculous and contradictory summation. I was disappointed and ANGRY. I was so angry I decided to FEED him his words, ramming...

Anywhere in North America is fine. And for that matter, we have at least one Canadian author on AW who is repped by someone in the UK. It's mostly done by email nowadays anyway. The occasional agent will refuse to take on foreign clients, but they aren't a majority. __________________ Progress on current WIP: I'm on MySpace , Twitter , and Facebook . There are some very bad creative writing programs out there, so care of selection is critical, but there are also many wonderful creative writing programs. A bunch of well-known writers found more than enough time to write in college, no matter what type of degree they were after. Two writers who wrote a LOT in college with very different types of degrees were Michael Crichton and Stephen King. Crichton actually managed to get rather famous...

Well, you might consider going to school with a career goal in mind. Statistically, few writers make enough from their writing to support themselves, particularly early on. English/ Creative Writing is not a career, per se. And because there's quite a few people out there who major in those subjects, there is a lot of competition.
You might consider what job you would like to work...

<quick check... yeah> Anita Blake's adventures precede Sookie Stackhouse and Twilight, so I can see as how the author might feel a tad miffed at being overlooked. I've read the Anita Blake comics and liked the story lots and was wowed by the art. Going by that alone, methinks the material might make for a damn good movie or TV series. I might try the novels sometime!

Yes, I would never give him the rights, I would consider, maybe, licensing the image/name/likeness for a time, a deal, under a drafted contract.
One thing I didn't mention is that the picture that was removed from Elfwood was not the first picture of the character. The original picture of the character is still on Elfwood, with the date, and comments going back to 2001. Also, I...

Condolences. But....you don't know for a fact that you can't write it again just as well, or maybe even better! The ideas are still in your head, and when you sit down to retype it, you might be surprised how many of the words are, too.
Also? Having had this happen only about a zillion times, I've developed the habit of typing Ctrl+s very often. Whenever my fingers pause to let my brain think,...

From the beginning I knew that the meteor from outer space that threatened the planet had already been done before.
So I changed it to a sentient meteor! And.. and this meteor doesn't impacts the planet! It expands like a blanket to feed on it!
My story also had a robed antagonist with long hair and a japanese sword.

Are there any references on AW for self-editing (fiction)? Is there any agreement on what the better ones out there are?
I ordered Self-Editing for Fiction writers.

Your writing setup
This is a two-part question. Part one: what kind of writing setup do you have (i.e., where is it, what tools do you use, what do absolutely have to have)? And part two: if money and space were no issue, what would your dream setup be?

I think the best ideas - and probably most ideas, in fact - are a bit of both. JK Rowling did say that Harry strolled into her head, fully formed, but I doubt the entire story came to her at all at once - I'm guessing she did her fair share of thinking and planning after that initial lightning bolt.
It's very exciting when something does just hit you out of the blue though. It's probably one...
