What powerful imagery! These young authors are clearly quite comfortable enough to express themselves openly, and inspired and valued enough to put great thought into their work. Congrats!

What to call it?

Hmmmm, what about inviting the families to the play, and then just saying breakfast will be served before the play at whatever time? I'm not entirely sure what JW's can and can't celebrate. Are they allowed to go to a winter celebration?

Combative Parents?

I've been teaching 21 years and I still get emails like that and, yes, they do upset me, BUT... it doesn't sting as badly as it used to. If I'm wrong, I admit it, but if the kid is at fault and the parents think they walk on water there's not a whole lot you can do except maintain your professionalism and hold your ground. Unfortunately events like this happen and over your career this won't be the last time....

Perhaps the nicest thing is, while these boys are both strong students, neither would ever describe themselves as being good writers. I think that was in impressing me the most is the time they are spending looking for just the right word.

Spiritual Schools?

There are Waldorf schools that are based around a universal concept of spirituality.

Agreed... I told a third grader to suck it up... and not in a nice jokey way... I knew as soon as I said it that it was wrong, and shortly afterwards, I apologized.

Bogart went also. It was AWESOME! I would be applying for advanced, if it wasn't for being pregnant. Next summer!

Can you change your focus (at least for the proposal - when I did my MA our profs expected that what you set out to do may not be exactly what you end up doing) so that you concentrate on training teachers to deal with the problem?

Hi and welcome!
First stop is with your department chair; you'll want him or her in on this meeting.
Second: is it school policy or your own policy that you'll notify parents every 2 weeks? If it's your own, then don't sweat it-- you're really going above and beyond for 15-16 year olds. If it's school policy, all the more reason to have your dept. chair there-- then it's a larger error ...

OK, a few thoughts:
- How do we know that things were different then? The vast majority of us weren't in the classroom, at least as teachers, back then.
- The world has changed in more ways than we can count in the last 50 years. The "traditional" family, where there's a mom and a dad and mom has warm cookies awaiting the kids when they finsih school exists pretty much only on reruns. ...

How very kind of her to let you know.
That's OK. Even the ignorant are entitled to an opinion.

I did my undergrad with Liberty and I am doing my M.Ed through Liberty right now.Their programs are really well done. Several people in my classes are in the MAT programs since the programs have similar class requirements and they speak highly of the MAT program as well.
Hope that helps!

I don't send it home over the holidays. I work them so hard throughout the year, they just need to be kids and spend time with their families. I certainly don't want to do work over the holidays!

That's awful, and is it legal for him to do that? I think I'd be calling some school board members.

When I get observed I just do what I would normally do. I think many principals can tell if you are putting on a show for them. After all, don't you want them to see you doing what you would normally do. Why would you have to create a lesson just for an observation?

Well, this subject comes up every year. You're likely to get a lot of NO votes on this type of activity. If you are saying that you live in an affluent area, then probably you're not going to have many problems with parents, but you need to think about those one or two kids who CAN'T purchase presents. Even if they do live in a nice neighborhood. Plus, I'd be interested to hear about the "...

I will give them a coupon for a Scholastic book (I'll use bonus points or free book coupons), a new box of crayons, and probably a Christmas eraser or something.
They will also get a little treat for St. Nick, which is a tradition in my family. Probably a pencil and a candy cane...

Our superintendent is in the schools often. This is my 3rd year, and she has visited my school 6 or 7 times in that time. She has been in my classroom twice. Her assistant is in even more. It is not a huge deal to me.
It does stink for you that it is the day before a 4-day weekend (and holiday).
But, the more you think about it, the more nervous you will be. Stop worrying

You have my sympathies. I would hate to work in an enviornment where it's all about "what I'm getting paid for."
Scary how many people are all about "ME ME ME!!" And how frightening it is to know that they're major influences over the elementrary schoolers in their classes!!!
