I had EXACTLY that roblem too and tonight I have just worked out the solution.
Log on to your LIVE account ( https://accountservices.msn.com/editprof.
srf )
with the login address you use and after logging in, edit your profile and
ensure that you at least have a first name and last name in your profile. (I
cheated and just added the 'nickname' (desired display name) in both fields)....

Seen this to on one of my systems rite out of the box never did figure out
what was wrong.
both seprate programs work fine.

Hello,
Have you tried uninstalling Messenger from Start Programs Add/Remove
Programs and downloading and installing Windows Live Essentials?

Are you sure the emoticons button is appearing? If they were all gone, it would indicate
that the formatting toolbar has just been turned off. If that were the case, you could open
any conversation window, press the Alt key on the keyboard to bring up the
menu bar, choose
Tools, then Show toolbars, and then choose Formatting.
Otherwise try shutting down Messenger and ...

It just took awhile to randomly popup...
I was in Vista SP2 Compatibility so I am trying XP SP3 now to see if that helps. I also checked in properties of the program (same place you set compatibility) to open minimized. Still it seems like I have a virus, but it could be Outlook opening messenger but Outlook isn't open at the moment so who knows.
