Advanced Task Manager and Toggle Settings are definitely a must!
ES File Explorer is a good file explorer app with support for remote file sources.
OI Notepad does exactly what it says on the tin.
PKT Auctions eBay is a must for eBay users.
And one of my favourites is WeatherBug, which is a great weather app that also shows the temperature in the notification bar.

I've not had any problems with missed calls at all. I haven't had anyone call me immediately after
hanging up a call, so I couldn't say if that's a problem for me too. I'll see if I can get that tested.
EDIT- Just tested it and calls immediately after hanging up rang on my phone as they should. so it doesn't look as though it's a standard Hero issue. I'm not on Orange though, so it may ...

That's interesting, considering it was widely expected that the HD2 would be running
Android!
I have a suspicion that this one isn't the HD2, but a new model and the HD2 will be physically pretty much the same as the HD but running Android.

I got to the point where I wasn't going to
let it beat me! Thing is, it all worked first time without issue, purely because of the fluke that I hadn't noticed the initial request for the address book for a while.
I can confirm, though, that having used it in anger for a while now the pairing has been absolutely stable, the address book has remained and the car kit hasn't ...

I am with three now ( was with virgin) i canform it works with htc diamond touch.
Please remember
all of three "apps" will not work as they flash their firmware on the fone ( skype e mobile etc)

The Hero is a great phone. It ticks pretty much all the boxes you've listed there - it's got GPS, it's running Android so it's perfect for geeks that like to tweak and play around, it's got plenty of great features, and, as it's running Android, more features can be added either for free, or very cheaply, from the Apps Market. And, lastly, it's not the iPhone. Win!
