Nicely executed but the screen strikes me as small for letter-boxed movies.

Are you having a house built and are not allowed on premise or was this in a renovation/basement finish project? Just curious why if it was a reno you didn't at least stick around to see that it was being done while you were there. You should have at least seen the empty cartridges/pails.

Spent most of yesterday tearing out the two post telecom rack that I installed in the basement when we moved in. I separated the 4 coax feeds that are being used for cable in the house from the unused ones. I also consolidated all of the CAT5 for internet that run throughout the house. I installed a temporary rack to hold the patch panel, router, and cable modems until I get cabinets up. Ultimately, these items will be installed in a wall...

3FB, looks like you will have a nice space there and are already well on your way. I have some layout comments as follows (just my opinion if this were mine): 1) What's the purpose of the "L" seating (assuming it is L if I'm looking at it correctly)? I'd ditch it and just go with single first row. I'd hate to be one of the guests who would have to be looking right for a 2 hr movie 2) Try to center your...

Bpape,
Thanks for the information. Now your saying to deaden the wall behind the
screen right? Do I need to cover the entire wall top to bottom, or just put
some absorbtion panels centered on the front wall behind the screen. Along
with the two bass traps in the corners. Should I also do the ceiling if
possible at the first reflection point? Thanks again for the information.

Don't try to estimate how big a screen you want based only on a mock-up, particularly if all you've ever seen is a 27-32 inch CRT for 25 years.
I did and now it's too small. Oh well there is always HT2.0.

Two words.... "Floor Plan"...
Skip the fancy stuff. Grab a pencil or fine tip marker, a piece of paper ( graph paper is nice but not necessary), and a ruler. Worry about scale later. Label it "rough floor plan" if it makes you feel better. 15 minutes tops then snap a pic.
You can edit in something fancy later.

judsonp,
I notice that some of your walls have a double top plate. Did you attach one top plate to the ceiling, build the wall on the floor, then raise it and attach in place? Is that easier/ faster than cutting individual studs to length and fastening them one at a time?
I'm curious what method you used.
Thanks,
Scott

The Plan:
1. Clean/Clear Junk in HT room area (20'x13')
2. Dry Wall/Insulation
3. Construct Trey Ceiling
4. Build Wall enclosing HT room
5. Construct Screen Wall
Here are some simple renderings I created in Sketchup:
These are just preliminary plans which will be updated/modified. Also, we haven't chosen a color scheme yet.

Do the joists run parallel to your screen wall or perpendicular? If parallel, easy...if not...hmm..
Also, you should look into the Powerbridge solution for your PJ if you don't already have an outlet wired up there.
Is it carpeted? You could always run the speaker cable behind the baseboard/tucked under where the carpet/baseboard meet then either up the wall in raceways or feed vertically...

A lot of discussion has been put out there to create a 1080p HD demo disc to show off our rooms. I’ve decided to start an official discussion about the creation and design of this disc.
Current Plan
We’ll make the disc so it can be burned to a normal DVD5 (single-sided) or possibly a DVD9 (dual-layer) to add a bit more room for content. You WILL NOT NEED a blu-ray burner for this ...

Oh and I also ended up running a whole new set of speaker cable to each of the 7 speakers. I was afraid if something happened to one I'd atleast have a backup. That and I ran 16 gauge to the fronts and with all the jogging around the romex it ended up being like 40-50 foot runs each. So I ran a new set of 14AWG everywhere just to be safe. And then on the projector, I thought I'd do the same, ...

We used either 7/8" or 1" long 1/4" crown staples. I had to lower the air pressure (to around 45 psi to get it to avoid cracking the frabricmate track. Sometime that happened, but it all seemed to do OK in the end.
Most of the time, the track would feel very tight to the wall, but on some smaller sections it would feel a bit loose. This didn't seem to make a difference once the fabric...

If you plan to soundproof the room, ceiling cans need to be carefully
considered. If no sound isolation, then no worries.

I have the basic cheapest Makita circular saw. For some reason the tension for the lever controlling the fence for the depth of cut keeps going in and out of adjustment. When that happens you have to get out a screwdriver remove a tab, turn a nut, replace the tab and screw. PIA. Also the retractable blade guard offers an inappropriate resistance when the blade is set at certain depths. I was ...

You gave the floor dimensions, but what I think is going to be the issue/question is how tall will your walls be, and how far is it from the floor to the apex of the of roof? General DIY construction questions may very well play a part in your project, is noise transmission in/out a concern? HVAC may be affected significantly by using the space with equipment in it that generates heat. Where ...
