How many audio DACs are in the DV-58AV? Does it use eight DACs (one for each preoutput), six (one for each channel), or three (with each DAC in stereo mode)?

If you use a nice programmable universal remote, you could program a sequence of commands that will allow you to press just one button on the remote to do everything you need to switch from dvd watching, to high-rez audio listening.

I guess nobody got the message. I never started playing around with LD until this year. Why? Because I wanted high quality preservations as explained before. I think it's awesome that I can do what VHS never could. This wouldn't be so significant if I could get to the studio masters :-)

Cool. Thanks for the info. Is the T2 chip the same as what's being used now
in the 5910 and external scalers coming out? (I don't know if they share
the same "chip" or features).

H/K DMC-1000 on clearance
If any of you are looking for a very good SD DVD player with multimedia capability you may want to check out this terrific bargain, especially if you have a large CD library and are tired of switching discs (like me).
Harman Kardon is apparently clearing out their remaining stock of the DMC-1000 digital media ...

What's the chipset? Mediatek? Faroudja?
From the reading of the Oppo page, Mediatek is likely the chipset ( Oppo 970HD with 1080p capability).

Well, it definetly didn't have anything to do with the pure direct mode in
my case. As far as the HDCP thing, I suppose that's a possibility, but I
would have to conclude that the cable was somehow contributing to the
problem based on the fact that it has not happened even once since I
swapped cables.

You should check out Josh Z's site as he directly address the issue of LaserDisc on digital displays.
You may be able to find satisfaction, but it is going to cost, big time (you'll need the upper tier of LD player and VP).
You didn't mention what player and VP you're using.

In case you didn't know, these things are available at http://www.abt.com/product/37455.html . Although I own the DV-58AV, Pioneer's best SD universal upconverting player, Pioneer's interface is so cool that I like keeping up to date on their latest developments. Before we talk about making the DV-49AV multi-region, we should check its firmware. Using the remote, press 'HOME MENU,' arrow ...

No. Laserdiscs are made by stamping a foil sheet, not by burning. Discs for
burning use organic dyes that crystallize with laser heat and orient in a
different direction. they are not actual pits and lands, but look like it
to a reading laser.
