Some of Steve Audio's quotes on Meyer & Moran's paper are from this Hydrogenaudio thread . Why he chose not to link to it, I cannot say; I would note taht HA is notoriously skeptical of 'audiophile' claims, and consistently champions ABX testing. Both characteristics come through when those quotes are read in context. Also, David Moran himself responds to some of the posts on that HA thread. And E Brad Meyer has...

I remember that DUP, where Stephen basically put it on the same level as respecting all religions or beliefs, however you want to phrase it. All are welcome under the tent. As to the rest of the discussion, I have no phucking idea what anyone is trying to get at or how it's going to make the crappy recorded music that's out there less crappy.

Wow!
This is 180 degrees from most of the questions that get asked here. Most people come here and say "I've bought all this equipment. How do I connect everything? What wires do I need?"
You, on the other hand, come in and say "I've spent a zillion dollars running wire all through my new house. What do I connect to the ends of each wire?" No information about what kind of wire has been...

Speakers. And when you have exhausted all your kids college funds, you still need better speakers. 90% of the sound is speakers.

If the hum only happens when the sub is connected, you could use an audio
isolation transformer to break the ground feeding the sub. Radio Shack
sells them. There may be other solutions, too.

I suggest you take the grills off and see if the gray wire connects to
anything at the speaker end. If not, ignore it.

Ouch.
Looks like you have enough extra wire in the walls (with all the zigzagging) to move it over a few bays if you need to. My advice is to bite the bullet and pop a hole in the drywall and invest in a long spade bit and drill over a couple spaces, then fish the wire through the new hole.
You have photos of the wiring so you should be able to avoid hitting any romex.

Marketing.
Arguments could be made about higher frequencies causing sub-harmonics that are audible to the human ear.
But even a CD at 44.1 khz cannot hold information above 22.05 khz, and the filters in place start killing the upper frequencies at 20 khz anyway.

So, will a properly set up room level the playing field?
No, how could it? There are way too many variables. For instance a bookshelf speaker with a 1 cubic foot cabinet is never going to be able to produce the bass of a large floor standing speaker with an 8 cubic foot cabinet, assuming they are of similar quality. Physics.

What sort of digital signal are you trying to send to the receiver? It
probably only recognizes linear PCM.

Always buy the best you can afford, or what you KNOW you need. Better
hardware = better sound and enjoyment and can be a long term investment, if
one has chosen wisely.

Put the subwoofer on the couch, then go crawl around and find where the bass sounds the best, put the woofer there.
