That's hardly "rewiring" it's just a matter of changing a plug. Of course it's ok. I've done it and so have hundreds of others.

A usb-serial convertor will not work (or at least I believe no-one has got one to work). You are probably better off getting an old pc with windows xp and a proper serial port. You will get a null-modem cable for a few quid from any satellite retailer or on fleabay. If you want the actual pinout just search for null modem pinout in
Google Image search.
