How Is Your Long-Term Memory?
Published (2009-12-18 10:22:00)
I've read that one of the ways ADDers compensate thru rote memory which goes into long term memory. I think there may be some difference tho between those who learn primarily aurally and those who learn visually but I can't find anything about it right now. I remember all sorts of stuff and yes I'd make a great trivial pursuit player except categories I've never shown an interest in.

Ooooohhhh Mike, Thank you thank you thankyou!!! Once again you have been able to articulate something I know is in my head and not coming out. You hit the nail on the head!!! -I ran the flag of perfection for many years. I was proud of it. I excelled in school, not because I studied and worked my rear end off, but because I was naturally intelligent and completely obsessive (perfectionistic) about everything. It wasn't enough to answer...

The only times I have "thoughts" racing through my head when I am trying to sleep is when I have composed a poem in my head and I need to get it typed out before I lose it! Most, if not all, of my best poetry has been composed while I was sleeping. In fact, I just composed a poem in my sleep last night and woke up at 1 am to type it out... I then posted it in the Creative Writing Forum at 3:17 this morning. The statement below is...

yes; I've really wanted to say to people who get annoyed with my forgetfulness: "HA! but, can YOU tell me what you wore on the first day of all four years in high school?" but then where would that get me? some day all of this will be useful, I'm tellin' ya!

With ADHD, a 'mistake'...
Published (2009-12-13 19:09:00)
As others have said, nobody can beat themselves up as hard as...themselves. A series of events can go so right for me, but all that confidence I suddenly felt go away with the first failure afterwards. I go back to the drawing board. Or I get on a roll, take on too much and feel crushed by the weight, leading to failure. I'm my own self-defeating reality.

Perfectionism and ADD?

I'm there, for sure. Getting better. Certain things are still probably more a priority than they need to be (ie, GPA) but other things can slide occasionally. I still tend to really suck at working in groups or on teams if I feel like the other people aren't doing things "correctly." I squirm in meetings if someone misspells a word (but I can avoid pointing it out, which wasn't a skill I had in, say, high school).

Thank you for sharing so honestly and openly. You courage and maturity to confront your inner-self strengthens my own resolve to work with my own issues.
I am also a heterosexual with no revulsion to homosexuality.
I didn’t really have a relationship with my biological father (he was out of the picture very early on). He had told my mother before ...

Awesome post. I like your insight. I do a lot of over analyzing and excuse making. And it has lead to a tailspin
hmm. It seems to me like the more complex things get the more excuses I come up with. Not saying these excuses are invalid though....
I mean essentially ADD was my 'excuse' for failing everything in school, smoking pot, having few friends, watching too much porn, procrastinating...

I suspect so. I find that I do best in high-stress, chaotic environments. I can't do the boring, everyday stuff but I can mediate and problem-solve when everyone else is falling apart during a crisis.

I just learned the importance of taking my Vyvanse every day! Two nights ago, I had a sleep study done because I have lost 23 pounds since I got diagnosed with APNEA and the doctor and I wanted to see why that darn CPAP is making it harder for me to sleep...and hopefully we can ditch the whole CPAP thing altogether.
Anyway, it took me longer than usual to fall asleep and then ...

Everything I do has to be perfect. I have to try my best to get good grades, I have to try my best to get into the best university, I have to get the best clothes, and of those clothes I get, I'm picky as hell. I want to convert boot leg jeans into straight leg jeans and I just got it tailored. I have to get the perfect computer, one that has the best reviews... Have I succeeded? Haha only in ...

I'd say this probably goes the opposite way as well. I know a man who was DXed as Bi-Polar who has a daughter that's disorganized, has difficulty holding down a job, and is taking several years extra getting her degree in spite of the fact that she's very bright. She likely has ADHD, and I'd say that there's probably a good chance her father has it instead of being Bi-Polar.
There's so much ...

I knew I had adhd a long time before I got treatment for it. I noticed you didn't mention medication. Is there a reason you haven't tried that route?
Not that it's the only viable option, but it has done wonders for me.

Sounds above and beyond symptoms of ADD discussed here.....sometimes uncontrolled thoughts and impulses are easier compartmentalized if given a seperate identity.....especially negative ones.....many of the things you mention are ADD symptomatic....some are not....the fact you feel uncomfortable with a few of them and recognize some of them to be extarordinarily compelling enough to seek advice ...

I often do this, but mostly just when it's something important and I need to absorb everything.
If I am reading a book, sometimes I'll do this to get myself started, but then I'm sucked in, and there goes an hour or two
