Seems that VF are now only stocking this phone for business customers, but you are right they should honour previous orders.
Seems that most Telco's want to clear the shelves of anything that might interfere with selling the iPhone

Firstly, welcome to the forums, sounds like a bad experience and a half that.
Is the person you mentioned a relative of yours?
Could they have opted for online billing? Have you asked them this and whether they've been being billed normally?
Not quite sure why it would have been an issue for Voda to adjust the DD amount.

If Voda won't help I'd be tempted to go to Otelo http://www.otelo.org.uk
Not sure why they wouldn't recognise the sort code even if it came back as Abbey or Santander. (I bank with first direct but if checked the sort code is registered as HSBC)
I'm sure you took care to ensure the bank's address was filled in correctly, etc.

Was this for roaming or in the UK? If roaming there is little you can do if the charges are in line with those published.
I agree these charges are steep but you used the data and so you are liable for it at the published rate.
How much data (in MB) did you use and where?
Was it handset use or where you using it a a modem?
