Have you thought about spiraling the guides to keep the line off the blank? Also, if you want to use more guides, you can save weight by going with smaller guides. IMO, its ok if the line touches the blank a little when its flexed, as long as the line doesn't go under the blank.

One other question.. The rod I am doing now, I applied the CP and finish (flexcoat) and now you can see the guide feet through the thread. The wraps were using size A NCP. What can I do differently?

Guide Heights

I have only made a few rods and have enjoyed it. I used the method of hanging weight off a glued on tip to see the natural blank flex and space the guides so that line from a reel to a different much lighter weight does not touch the blank. Obviously, using this method means that low guides require more guides. Is there a particular model number of Fuji, Alps, or whatever that has a good height for casting rods? In my mind, too many low guides...

Pink Christmas Rod
Published (2009-12-22 10:42:00)
Mary and I made this one for our 9 year old niece for Christmas. My brother takes her out fishing a lot on the halfday party boats. Out here in So.Cal that means fishing for calico bass, barracuda, bonita, sand bass and various rockfish. Most of that fishing is done on 20lb class setups(give or take personal preference of course). This is a Mudhole 15-25lb 7' blank. Fuji guides, hypalon grips, Perfection seat. Open snowflake wrap. Tried to...

Thanks guys, seeing he is my oldest fishing friend (known him since 6th grade '68') I'll probably be posting a bait caster. He really liked it and anybody that can put up with fishing with me for that long is worth the effort. Besides, I'm enjoying building again even if it's for once in a while. I believe if people would give it a go they would see how good of a hobby it could be and for some here a living....

There are quite a few books & DVD's available. Locally you have Fishing Tackle Unlimited where you can get much of what you need. See Terry Jones there.
My website The Rod Builder's Library has a LOT of free tutorials to download.

I probably wouldn't do a tiger wrap with that theme. In my mind it would clash.
On second thought, if you did one with a black top layer and green/grey bottom maybe?
Did you know you can get fully camo finish blanks?
If you get a camo'ed blank & would wrap the guides in black.
Your going to have trouble with the seam doing the deer hide. I assume you would cover it with finish or ...

Brother,
We have all been looking for the answer to this question for years. The only printer that uses metallic paint is the ALPS printer. They are discontinued and the cheapest I've found a used on for is $1600.
That's why you need to get labels done through www.tightlinescutomrods.com or decal connection.
swampland has a metallic film you can print on but for the most part you can't...

I normally put the trim bands for a couple turns around the crosswrap to allow me to tighten/ pack it all up first and then CP. It does not really matter how you do it IMO just as long as you develop a process that works for you. You will find that some applications my require it before and some after. Honestly there is no wrong way. Just remember that the cp will harden the thread and if you ...
