Evened out the 8 velociraptors so they fall 2 per expander . HDTach Avg: 487MB/s HDTune Avg: 441MB/s Spiky graphs as well, from what I used to seeing from such a tiny slice(120GB) of such a big chunk (2.4TB) of fast drive space.

Just put the order in this morning for the Hitachi's. Wish i would have looked on Newegg earlier as they have a $30 US rebate on the Hitachi 1TB drives right now, but of course they are out of stock.

Looks like it is the DRAM error reporting driver that is not a available. I looked at the HCL and there were other 7501 chipset servers that had that error in the pci info but were certified anyway. I am going to buy the AOC-SAT2-MV8 and give ZFS and RAID-Z a try.

Yeh, but he's not using the Raptors as DV editing disks, just system and apps. It would not really speed up the editing process or the torrent unless it's on the array. As for speeding up VM and massive multitasking in general, I'd go with 64-bit OS and 8GB RAM. 2x2GB DDR2-800 4-4-4-12 is about $50 now.

It highly depends on workload. In my case I really noticed going from raptors to sas it was plain just with normal application loads. now my workload is highly dependant on many relatively small reads/writes and running numerous items at the same time so it's not even close to a normal desktop user workload. The full duplex nature of sas over half duplex sata helps but the main item was the smaller platter size and faster rpm (ie, shorter...

Supermicro AOC-SAT2-MV8 and RAID 05
Published (2009-01-02 20:05:00)
Isn't the AOC-SAT2-MV8 just a dumb SATA II card? You could just run a software RAID 5 or RAID 6 across the drives.

I'm experiencing a serious performance issue with my Areca and velociraptors that I just can't explain. This problem manifests as: 1. Much lower than expected sequential read performance given the drives for a test-case RAID 0 to check baseline performance. 2. A reduction in intial performance after first IO into an array on the Areca. 3. The performance actually drops going from 6 drive ...

I wondering about which 1 TB-drive to get for my areca, I will be using them in a 4-disk raid5-array. For desktop-drives all alternatives seem to have som drawbacks 1. Samsung F1: some reported problem with areca, however firmware on disks may hav changed, and areca firmware has been updated. Anyone know if theese problems are still unresolved? 2. Seagate AS-series. Also some reported ...

I decided to do a little testing today, since I had my system apart swapping in a new drive. I have an LSI PCI-X SAS controller in my system, and wanted to compare it to the onboard SATA controller (X7DAL/5000X/ESB2). Problem is I'm not sure which controller is giving better results, or if there's really any difference. Here are the results from HD Tune; can anyone see a clear winner from them?...

I am trying to decide between two different RAID controllers for a new build. The system will act as a workstation and will have approximately 2TB configured in a RAID 5 array using Western Digital RE3 drives in either a 3 x 1TB or 4 x 750GB configuration. The two controllers I am considering are the 3ware 9650SE-4LPML and/or the Adaptec 2251800-R (3405) kit. I am asking this as I do not ...

Interesting that I am pegged at 450MB/s max sequential read for a RAID 0 array with 6 velociraptors (on a shortstroked 100GB array just for the test) on my 1680ix-16. Is that the SAS overhead kicking in? I thought the 1680's had a top-end around 600MB/s. 450 seems a bit low. In the end it probably has little impact on what I am using it for, but 450 is unexpected.

I can find all kinds of benchmarks out there about how well raptors are at games, office, and other single tasks, but never a benchmark on dumping a dv tape while playing stalker and 1000 active tcp connections on vuze in a vmware linux guest. Is my load more of a server load that would benefit from sas/scsi? I run games, vmware, irc bots, 12mbit of torrents, edit or encode movies, office, ...

Does anyone know if these two compatible with one another? I have two Powervaults connected to a PERC3/DC and the system has been experiencing random power shutdowns any where from 18 to 36 hours of being powered up. The load of the system does not appear to make any difference. The controller is good as well as the disks. I have recently removed the Powervaults and moved a couple of ...

I currently have 80915. What is the change log for 81208 beta BIOS? here: ftp://ftp.areca.com.tw/RaidCards/BIO.../ARC1680/Be ta/ Any good reason to go there? Improvement on sata performance perhaps?

Western Digital RE3 WD1002FBYS 1TB.....works with Areca? These are specifically RAID products but I just want to be sure because I had an unpleasant surprise when I didn't research the WD6400AAKS SE16 without doing my homework. Here: ftp://ftp.unnet.nl/pub/areca/RaidCar...ist_121708. pdf I see "testing" on SAS HBAs....
